More than half of the total peatland area of Belarus (over 1.5 million ha) has been drained for agriculture, forestry, and peat extraction. Out of this area, 122 200 ha are cutover peatlands that have been abandoned after peat excavation and 36 800 ha are still being exploited. During the last few years, about 50 000 ha of drained peatlands have been rewetted. Currently, another 500 000 ha are potentially available for hydrological restoration.

The project ‘Rehabilitation of the bog Achternmeer by utilization of the peat’ combines the mining of peat from a bog previously used for agricultural purposes with continuous rewetting and the development of transition bog vegetation. The advantage of the applied excavation method (upper– and subfield process) is that the rewetting of the cutover subfields starts in the first year. The part of the peat profile which is planned to be excavated will be removed with a hydraulic excavator in once do wn to the rewetting horizon. This process will be done in several slots of 5 m to 15 m width in a year. During the following years the rewetted slat will expand continously until the complete field is at the level of the planned watertable.

Bord na Móna (the Irish Peat Company) owns extensive areas of Irish peatlands (around 80 000 ha), primarily in the midlands of Ireland. These lands have been developed at an industrial scale for fuel, energy and horticultural growing media. Rehabilitation is being carried out in areas where peat production has ceased. One such site is Ballycon, Co. Offaly. The main aims of the rehabilitation are to: • ensure the stabilization of the former peat production areas, • minimize potential peat runoff and • encourage the re–establishment of a diversity of semi–natural habitats appropriate to the characteristics of the site.
