    This is the final report of the twenty-ninth session of the Asia-Pacific Fishery Commission (APFIC) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 21 to 23 August 2006. Major topics discussed included (i) the status and potential of fisheries and aquaculture in Asia and the Pacific, (ii) selected issues of regional importance including the increasing amount of low value/trash fish as a percentage of total marine capture and a co-management approach to fisheries involving a partnership between government an d local communities, (iii) policy challenges and emerging issues in the region and (iv) and the work plan for the next biennium.

    This publication presents the final report of the sixty-ninth session of the Executive Committee of the Asia-Pacific Fishery Commission (APFIC) which was held in Pattaya, Thailand from 15 to 16 December 2003. Among the major topics discussed was the future role of APFIC. Most members wished to see the Commission continue its functions and to assume a new role as a regional consultative body to promote integration of the regional activities relating to fisheries. To provide an integrating mechani sm for APFIC to assume its proposed role, it was recommended that APFIC organize and conduct a regional consultative forum as a biennial event. A summary of the main recommendations/decisions is included as an appendix to the report.

    The 7th RCFM commenced with the welcome remarks by the Undersecretary and Director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture and the opening remarks by the FAO Representative in the Philippines. The Deputy Director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division of the FAO delivered a keynote address on “Sustainable development for resilient blue growth of fisheries and aquaculture” in the Plenary Session, providing a global perspective of the contributions of fisheries and aquaculture to sustainable blue growth and examples of blue growth implementation around the world. The second part of the plenary session reviewed the status and trends and major issues in aquaculture and fisheries and the importance of Blue Growth in this respect.
