Synopsis (short abstract) The degree of potential environmental impacts of the different livestock production systems are illustrated crudely by their relative consumption of feeds. The types of environmental impacts likely to derive from the production, transport and processing of feeds are outlined in Chapter 4, being mainly due to land-use and cropping for commodity production. Possible direct and indirect indicators of these impacts are identified in Chapter 5, though these remain to be tested in particular applicati ons.

The current and future food issues in China have aroused worldwide attention and concerns in recent years. The future food issue in China is by nature a livestock problem. Expanding population, rising income and aspiration, coupled with rapid urbanization, will continuously enhance the demand for livestock. This growth in demand calls for further intensification of natural resource uses, which will increasingly have significant economic, ecological and environmental impacts. As China becomes mor e and more integrated in the global economy, this development trend in China will not only have significant implications for China itself, but also for the rest of the world. This paper will provide an overview and a review on the driving forces for livestock demand, the industrialization of livestock production, the requirements for feed resources and the environmental implications in China.
