Synopsis (short abstract) During the last four decades a number of animal-nutrition-based technologies and practices have been developed and used in developing countries, with varying degrees of success. Some technologies have produced profound beneficial efects and have been widely used; while others have shown potential on research stations but have not been taken up by farmers. To learn from these experiences, the FAO Animal Production and Health Division organised an e-conference from 1 to 30 September 2010. This doc ument presents the current status of animal nutrition practices and technologies being practiced in developing countries and an analysis of the reasons for their success or failure. It also contains a synthesis paper that summarises the major issues discussed by participants and presents conclusion drawn and lessons learnt for the future.This document is expected to assist developing countries make informed decisions about the adoption of appropriate animal nutrition practices and technologies. In addition, it should also be useful for the development community, including donor agencies, to better understand, prioritize and support appropriate animal nutrition practices and technologies in developing countries.

    The need for developing suitable feeds based on locally available inexpensive ingredients has been widely recognized. Since lack of trained personnel is the main constraint in the development of fish feed technology in developing countries, the FAO/UNDP Aquaculture Development and Coordination Programme (ADCP) organized a special training course in fish feed technology at the College of Fisheries, University of Washington, Seattle, with a view to forming a small corps of fish feed specialists wh o could then be the focal points for future feed development programmes in their respective countries. The first report of the training course was presented in the report ADCP /REP/79/8. This present volume represents the edited texts of lectures presented by different specialists. Some additional material has been included for more complete coverage of the subject. Together, these texts may be considered to constitute a manual on fish feed technology, even though they were not prepared for that purpose. Twenty-six papers are included, under the general headings: (1) Digestion, physiology and anatomy; (2) nutritional bioenergetics; (3) nutritional biochemistry; (4) feedstuffs; (5) feed formulation; (6) feed manufacturing technology; (7) practical diets; and (8) quality control. Appendices include conversion tables, electrical data, and details on pelletability of selective feedstuffs, pellet die specifications, and equipment requirements for an 8 ton an hour feed mill.

    This document consists of comprehensive guidance for producing FAO publications throughout all stages of the process, from conceptualization to dissemination and beyond. It is divided into sections focusing on matters regarding the workflow, visual identity, content and structure of FAO publications. In addition to FAOSTYLE in six languages, this guidance also includes: "Publishing policy", providing high-level guidance aimed at those involved in the creation or approval of a publishing plan; "Authorship and plagiarism guidelines", outlining the principles and criteria for authorship of FAO publications; "Graphic design guidelines", focusing on the practical application of FAO's visual identity and design standards; “Responsible use of AI in publishing”, covering how to use AI responsibly and ethically when producing a publication; “Open Access policy”, a summary of the policy that encourages the wide use, reproduction and dissemination of the intellectual property that FAO produces; and "Digital publishing", guidance on how to create a digital (HTML) publication. Publishing at FAO is a living document and will continue to evolve as publishing practices evolve. A new section on managing a publishing project is forthcoming. Last updated June 2025.
