No results found.Despite the progress made on climate change adaptation and mitigation in the Pacific, the agriculture sector remains peripheral in regional discussions on climate change and the path required for a sustainable future The Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture ( began during Fiji’s leadership at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change ( Conference of the Parties ( 23 and discussions, expert meetings and workshops dedicated to the KJWA have continued since that date The KJWA addresses six interrelated topics on soils, nutrient use, water, livestock, methods for assessing adaptation, and the socio economic and food security dimensions of climate change across agricultural sectors An emphasis on the importance of agriculture and food security in regional strategic climate change dialogue is essential if countries are to quantify the potential benefits of climate mitigation actions on the agricultural sector Significant progress has been made in recent years, with countries agreeing on a roadmap for the KJWA and, in 2018 42 submissions to the KJWA were made to the UNFCCC. -

No results found.The Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Pacific rely heavily on fishing for food, nutrition, and jobs. However, the sustainability of these fisheries is threatened by challenges like poor management and illegal fishing practices. Climate change also plays a major role, affecting fisheries through extreme weather, rising sea levels, ocean acidification, flooding, and coastal erosion. How well communities can adapt depends on their access to resources, technology, and knowledge. In addition to these challenges, improved management strategies must also consider gender issues and work to reduce gender inequalities. In 2019, the FAO and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) conducted gender assessments and found a strong need to improve data collection and to create strategies that give women more opportunities in fishing and its related industries. This project, in partnership with national fisheries agencies in Fiji, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, aimed to strengthen the ability of coastal communities to manage their marine resources and strengthen the role and participation of women in fisheries and aquaculture. -

No results found.Pacific Island Countries ( face a serious burden of malnutrition, including acute and/or chronic undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, obesity, overweight, and diet related non communicable diseases ( Diet is one of the single most important contributors to malnutrition, which is influenced by many complex and multilayered causes, such as personal preferences, culture, religion, the environment, economics, availability of foods Food Based Dietary Guidelines ( provide context specific guidance on how to make nutritionally balanced food and beverage choices prepared in a safe and hygienic way available for the general population and for vulnerable subpopulations, including pregnant and lactating women and infants and young children The Pacific regional FBDGs, which were prepared by The Pacific Community ( in 2002 are used by PICs to provide guidance on healthy food consumption and meals Subsequently, the SPC published new Pacific guidelines for healthy living in 2018 to replace the 2002 Pacific FBDGs.

This new strategy replaces the previous strategy from 2017 to better FAO's climate action with the Strategic Framework 2022-2031, and other FAO strategies that have been developed since then. The Strategy was elaborated following an inclusive process of consultation with FAO Members, FAO staff from headquarters and decentralized offices, as well as external partners. It articulates FAO's vision for agrifood systems by 2050, around three main pillars of action: at global and regional level, at country level, and at local level. The Strategy also encourages key guiding principles for action, such as science and innovation, inclusiveness, partnerships, and access to finance.

No results found.The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018. -
