No results found.In January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak of a new coronavirus disease in Hubei Province, China, a public health emergency of international concern. FAO is assisting the meat and dairy sector in target countries in Central Asia and Georgia by introducing measures to ensure the safety of their operators and reduce the risks of COVID‑19 infection and its spread. Food industry food safety management systems include good hygiene practices, cleaning and sanitation, zoning of processing areas, supplier control, storage, distribution and transport, personal hygiene and fitness at work – all the basic conditions and activities necessary to maintain a hygienic food processing environment. As regards COVID‑19 preventive measures in particular, the use of disinfectants and possible other chemicals needs to be carefully assessed so as to ensure that the contamination of products, or interventions putting products produced for human consumption by the enterprise at risk, does not occur. -

However, less attention is being paid to the biodiversity beneath our feet, soil biodiversity, which drives many processes that produce food or purify soil and water. This report is the result of an inclusive process involving more than 300 scientists from around the world under the auspices of the FAO’s Global Soil Partnership and its Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils, the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative, and the European Commission. It presents concisely the state of knowledge on soil biodiversity, the threats to it, and the solutions that soil biodiversity can provide to problems in different fields. It also represents a valuable contribution to raising awareness of the importance of soil biodiversity and highlighting its role in finding solutions to today's global threats. -

2011This edition of The State of the World’s Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture presents objective and comprehensive information and analyses on the current state, trends and challenges facing two of the most important agricultural production factors: land and water. Land and water resources are central to agriculture and rural development, and are intrinsically linked to global challenges of food insecurity and poverty, climate change adaptation and mitigation, as well as d egradation and depletion of natural resources that affect the livelihoods of millions of rural people across the world. Current projections indicate that world population will increase from 6.9 billion people today to 9.1 billion in 2050. In addition, economic progress, notably in the emerging countries, translates into increased demand for food and diversified diets. World food demand will surge as a result, and it is projected that food production will increase by 70 percent in t he world and by 100 percent in the developing countries. Yet both land and water resources, the basis of our food production, are finite and already under heavy stress, and future agricultural production will need to be more productive and more sustainable at the same time. -
