Synopsis (short abstract) Agriculture is the mainstay of the Kenyan economy, contributing 26 percent of gross domestic product directly, and 25 percent indirectly. The sector accounts for 65 percent of Kenya’s total exports and provides over 70 percent of informal employment in rural areas, representing the means of livelihood for the majority of Kenyan people. Arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) cover nearly 80 percent of Kenya and present an enormous potential contribution to national agricultural production, as well as basic food and income for farmers residing in these areas. However, the ASALs have the lowest development indicators and the highest incidence of poverty in the country; food security is thus a major concern in the ASALs and the country at large. The KCEP-CRAL programme was an expansion of the Kenya Cereal Enhancement Programme, which became effective in April 2014 through a partnership between the Government of Kenya, the European Union, and IFAD. The main objective of the programme was to improve the economic potential of smallholders in Kenya’s ASALs and their ability to handle their natural resources and resilience to climate change in an increasingly vulnerable ecosystem, and to reduce rural poverty and food insecurity among these populations.

    In addition to its high vulnerability to climate change and variability, Malawi also has low capacity to adapt to the phenomenon, with the subsequent impact therefore posing a serious developmental challenge. In this context, the European Union’s Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA) programme financed a four and a half year programme with FAO to address community resilience to climate change in Malawi through the present Action. The Action was aimed at strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities to climate variability and change through sound safety nets and productive investments, using a holistic approach that blends disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA), addressing the multiple threats to livelihoods through short and medium term interventions. It was designed to consolidate linkages and synergies among ongoing resilience building and social protection programmes led by the Government.

    The Caribbean Strategy for Climate-Resilient Forests and Rural Livelihoods matches prioritised forestry initiatives for vertical and horizontal scaling with suitable funding streams. It also identifies possible regional and national partners for project development and execution. While the strategy is focused on forest resources management, it also emphasises poverty alleviation and food security in line with FAO’s Strategic Objectives. The strategy also has a gender and youth focus in addition to an emphasis on ecosystem services to support agricultural systems. Overall, the strategy can be thought of as a roadmap to mobilise investment for specific priority initiatives for vertical and horizontal scaling of climate resilience actions in the Caribbean forestry sector.
