No results found.The Scientific Advisory Committee on Fisheries (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its eighteenth session in Nicosia, Cyprus, from 21 to 23 March 2016. The session was attended by delegates from 20 contracting parties, 7 representatives of observers, representatives of the FAO, including its regional projects, and the GFCM Secretariat. The Committee reviewed the work carried out during the 2015–2016 intersession, including within its newly established subr egional subsidiary bodies, two of which had met for the first time in 2016 (Subregional Committee for the Adriatic Sea and Subregional Committee for the Central Mediterranean). On the occasion of the publication on The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries (SoMFi) 2016, the Committee examined the main highlights of the report, including key characteristics of Mediterranean fleet and catches, socio-economic, and bycatch, highlighting its importance as a a flagship publication aimed at re gularly disseminating information on fisheries in the GFCM area of application. The Committee formulated advice on the following aspects: i) marine environment and ecosystems, including vulnerable marine ecosystems, marine spatial protection measures and bycatch; ii) statistics and information, including the implementation of the Data Collection Reference Framework (DCRF); iii) status of Mediterranean stocks and associated scientific advice, including at the subregional level. At the Mediterrane an level, the Committee discussed in particular the specific cases of red seabream (Pagellus bogaraevo) in the Strait of Gibraltar and of European eel (Anguilla anguilla), recognizing the importance of collecting and analysing accurate data towards the development of a Mediterranean adaptive regional management plan for this species. -

No results found.The Scientific Advisory Committee on Fisheries (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its nineteenth session in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 16 to 19 May 2017. The session was attended by delegates from 18 Mediterranean contracting parties and one cooperating non-contracting party, nine observers, representatives of the FAO, including its regional projects, the GFCM Secretariat and invited experts. The Committee reviewed the work carried out during the 2016–2017 intersession, including within its four new subregional subsidiary bodies (Subregional Committee for the Adriatic Sea, Subregional Committee for the Central Mediterranean, Subregional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean and Subregional Committee for the Western Mediterranean) which all met during the intersession. In relation to the recent adoption and launch of the mid-term strategy (2017–2020) towards the sustainability of Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries, the Committee welcomed the swift launch of multiple priority activities, recognizing that the strategy objectives were ambitious but that related action was necessary. In this respect, it discussed the main activities already launched or foreseen as well as the major issues to be tackled by the GFCM Forum on Fisheries Science (Fish Forum), due to be held at the end of 2018. Furthermore, the Committee formulated advice on the following aspects: i) overall status of Mediterranean stocks; ii) marine environment and ecosystem s; and iii) data collection and quality indicators. In line with the subregional approach implemented and based on the conclusions of the four subregional committees, the SAC also provided specific advice for each subregion. At the Mediterranean level, the Committee discussed: i) the indicators of good environmental status; ii) the status of the stocks, in particular European hake; iii) the management of red coral populations (Corallium rubrum, L.) and of European eel (Anguilla anguilla); iv)the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing; v) interactions between fisheries and marine environment, including deep-sea fisheries and vulnerable marine ecosystems; and vi) data collection and data quality. At the subregional level, based on the priority species identified for each subregion, specific conclusions were related to the management of i) small pelagic species in the Adriatic Sea, including the establishment of a fisheries restricted area; ii) demersal species in the Strait of Sicily; iii) blackspot seabream in the western Mediterranean; and iv) deep sea fisheries and non-indigenous species in the eastern Mediterranean. In addition, the Committee discussed the implementation of the SAC subregional approach. Finally, the Committee agreed upon its work plan for 2017–2019 -

No results found.The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) held its twelfth session in Budva, Montenegro, from 25 to 29 January 2010. The Session was attended by delegates from nineteen Members of the Commission. The Committee reviewed the activities and results obtained by its subsidiary bodies along with the proposals of the Coordinating Meeting of the Sub-Committees (CMSC), as well as the achievements by the FAO regional projects in suppor t to the GFCM activities. It reflected on the management advice drawn up by the Sub-Committee on Stock Assessment on the basis of thirty-one stock assessments and agreed that the existing scientific evidence sufficed to support that the Commission takes relevant management measures notably to establish a regional logbook and to monitor the fishing capacity in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The SAC suggested that, in future, management advice on small pelagic fisheries should bene fit more from the development of biological Reference Points for Biomass. It further discussed several important topics including recreational fisheries, improvement of gear selectivity and reduction of bycatch, the impact of climate change, the impact of alien species on fisheries and other issues such as the exploitation of red corals, the status of elasmobranch species and the follow-up on fisheries-restricted areas. The Committee appraised the data exchange protocols and related el ectronic tools developed by the Secretariat for the submission of Task 1 data. It also proposed that the criteria to identify sensitive habitats should be revisited and amended. Furthermore, the Committee acknowledged the proposal on the new functioning of the SCSA working groups on stock assessments, on the progress made on the updating of the SAC glossary and on updating of the reference frame of SAC and the establishment of a future strategic workplan. Finally, the SAC agreed upon i ts workplan for 2010 and renewed the mandate of the bureau for another two-year term and nominated a new coordinator for each of its four Sub-Committees.
