2005This is the first of the two-volume proceedings from "Deep Sea 2003: Conference on the Governance and Management of Deep-sea Fisheries" held in Queenstown, New Zealand from 1 to 5 December 2003. It includes the keynote addresses and papers presented on the Conference themes that covered: environment, ecosystem biology, habitat, diversity and oceanography; population biology and resource assessment; harvesting and conservation strategies for resource management; technology require ments; monitoring, compliance and controls; a review of existing policies and instruments; and governance and management. It also provides the perspectives of participating experts and the Conference Steering Committee. The general conclusions of the Conference contain the elements that must be addressed and undertaken if deep-sea fish resources are to be sustained and their habitat protected to ensure productivity and safeguard deep-sea biodiversity. The second volume of the p roceedings includes posters and corresponding papers presented at the Conference as well as papers from workshops held prior to the main Conference. -

No results found.Adressing the need to enhance sustainability in the use of deep-sea living resources and biodiversity conservation in in the ABNJ, is the Common Oceans ABNJ Deep Seas Project, one of the Projects of the Global sustainable fisheries management and biodiversity conservation in the ABNJ Program (Common Oceans ABNJ Program), supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The Project, led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN-FAO) and United Nations Environment (UNEP), brings together a broad range of partners working on conservation issues in the ABNJ globally. The partnership includes the regional fisheries bodies responsible for the management of deep-sea fisheries, Regional Seas Programmes, fishing industry partners and international organizations. -

No results found.The report describes (a) the reasons for convening DEEP SEA 2003, An International Conference on Governance and Management of Deep-Sea Fisheries, that was held in Queenstown, New Zealand, from 30 November to 5 December 2003, (b) the agenda and structure of the Conference, (c) the main conclusions of the Conference and (d) a prognoses for the future of deep-sea fisheries as seen by a selected group of experts. The report also documents a number of actions that the participants, in general, be lieved needed to be addressed, many of them on an urgent basis, as a means of developing a global programme of future activities to address the problems that had been identified and discussed. In addition to reporting on the events and outcomes of DEEP SEA 2003, this document provides reports from four workshops that addressed topics of relevance to the Conference theme. These were held concurrently and just prior to DEEP SEA 2003 in Dunedin, at the University of Otago, from 27 to 29 Novembe r 2003. These workshops addressed the following topics: Assessment and management of deepwater fisheries; Conservation and management of deepwater Chondrichthyan fishes; Management of small-scale deepwater fisheries; and Marine bioprospecting. This report will be complemented by a publication of the proceedings of the Conference in the FAO Fisheries Proceeding series.
