No results found.Through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA), the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000 to FAO to mitigate the adverse impacts of two waves of devastating flash floods (May–June 2022) on the livelihoods and food security of vulnerable farming and fishing households. With Belgium’s generous support, FAO will provide 11 200 flood-affected farming and fishing households (56 000 people) with time-critical production inputs. The planned emergency assistance packages will enable the affected communities to restore their livelihoods, and increase crop and aquaculture production. The Central Emergency Response Fund will complement this project by funding interventions to support the livestock sector. This document provides a brief description of the current context of the intervention and highlights the importance of the contribution in enhancing the resilience of flood-affected communities. -

No results found. On 27 September 2022, Category 3 Hurricane Ian hit the western region of Cuba with strong winds, significant storm surge and coastal flooding. Despite the measures taken by the Government of Cuba to harvest existing crops early and evacuate livestock, the hurricane caused significant damages and losses in the agriculture, livestock and fishing sectors – people’s main sources of livelihoods in affected municipalities. As a result, the food security of the population in the three most impacted provinces and the country’s capital is at risk. Thanks to Belgium’s contribution, through SFERA, FAO will implement activities to protect the livelihoods of poultry farmers. Rehabilitating poultry production facilities affected by the hurricane will enable producers to provide for their families and improve the food security and nutrition. The support provided by FAO and Belgium through this intervention is implemented in synergy with another project through which FAO, in partnership with the government, is rehabilitating vegetable production. This twofold response will contribute to protecting and restoring the food production and livelihoods of affected smallholders and those members of cooperatives, as well as improving the nutrition and diet diversity of the wider community. -

No results found. The escalation of hostilities in Israel and Palestine is drastically affecting all dimensions of food security. Agricultural and agrifood activities in Gaza have largely collapsed since the onset of the ongoing hostilities and the interruption of water, food and fuel supply. Through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities, the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 850 000 to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to distribute animal fodder to 2 000 livestock-keeping households (11 000 people) in Gaza, who collectively own approximately 30 000 small ruminants. Once access allows, the distribution will target smallholders in the southern governorates of Gaza, in coordination with the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture as well as local non-governmental organizations. This document provides a brief description of the context of the intervention and highlights the importance of the contribution in protecting the livelihoods of the affected communities.
