Synopsis (short abstract) This set of Guidelines is aimed at protected area staff, conservation scientists, managers and stakeholders involved in the management of protected areas in Turkey. It provides substantial support to protected area planners, decisionmakers and managers, and staff of the MAF, helping them to assess and improve management effectiveness for protected areas and monitor regularly the management effectiveness of these unique and valuable sites. Protected areas are the cornerstone of biodiversity, habitat and ecosystem services conservation. However, unprecedented global losses due mainly to human activities are exerting pressure on these sites. Achieving long-term sustainability and the expected benefits of these areas requires effective management, a key to which is a well-prepared management plan. A second vital component for effective protected area management – in addition to legal and administrative regulations and management plans – is the availability of quantitatively and qualitatively equipped human resources. The third element necessary to ensuring that management and protection goals are achieved in a protected area is the establishment of participative opportunities and the integration of purposeful processes that include all relevant stakeholders. The mechanism for management effectiveness assessment evaluates the presence and efficiency of all of these aspects.

The Guidelines for Engaging Stakeholders in Managing Protected Areas have been developed as part of the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Turkeys’ Steppe Ecosystem Project. The guidelines are designed for managers and staff of protected areas, as well as conservation scientists and stakeholders involved in the management of protected areas in Turkey. They cover a strong theoretical base highlighting the relevance and importance of stakeholder participation in protected area management, as well as the current state of stakeholder participation in Turkey’s protected areas system. The guidelines focus primarily on the international and national development of stakeholder engagement in protected areas. They also discuss the process of establishing, planning and managing protected areas, and explain how to engage with stakeholders at the national level through internationally accepted approaches.

Damaging wildfires in many parts of the world in recent years have prompted an increase in demand for technical support for integrated fire management. As part of the response, FAO and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) established the Global Fire Management Hub (Fire Hub), which was launched at the 8th International Wildland Fire Conference in May 2023. The aim of the Fire Hub is to strengthen the capacity of countries to implement integrated fire management and reduce the negative effects of wildfires on people, landscapes and the global climate. One of the Fire Hub’s first activities was to update FAO’s Fire Management Voluntary Guidelines: Principles and strategic actions, which was first published in 2006, to guide implementation of integrated fire management at the landscape level, enhance best fire-management practices, including cultural practices for sustainable land use, and engage diverse stakeholders.This second edition of the guidelines, now titled, Integrated Fire Management Voluntary Guidelines: Principles and strategic actions, benefited from contributions from the Global Fire Monitoring Center (GFMC), the International Liaison Committee of the International Wildland Fire Conferences, and Regional Fire Management Resource Centers of the GFMC’s Global Wildland Fire Network. In addition, FAO engaged with experts in countries and specialized partner institutions for insights into new developments and solutions in integrated fire management.

The Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA) were prepared at the request of Members in an inclusive, transparent and participatory manner under the guidance of the Sub-Committee on Aquaculture of the FAO Committee on Fisheries. The GSA offer a comprehensive framework for the management and development of sustainable aquaculture and are designed to support Members and other stakeholders in the implementation of the 1995 Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. The GSA were created in response to the rapid expansion of aquaculture, the fastest-growing food production sector in the world, driven by scientific progress, technological innovations and investment, amid a consistently increasing global demand for aquatic foods. However, as with all food production sectors, this rapid growth has exposed challenges to the sustainability of aquaculture and raised concerns about potential negative impacts. The GSA provide a comprehensive framework for addressing these challenges.
