Book (stand-alone)Collaborative change: a communication framework for climate change adaptation and food security 2010Compelling issues such as climate change and food security require multidisciplinary approaches and multistakeholder action in the process of social learning for adaptive livelihoods. This entails an increasing demand for information, knowledge and participation that puts the need for planned communication activities at the centre of development initiatives. The paper provides a conceptual framework to participatory communication applied to climate change adaptation and food security. It demons trates the need to fully integrate Communication for Development (ComDev) in community-based adaptation approaches. Integration of ComDev can provide the most vulnerable groups a chance to generate their own coping strategies, thanks to an equitable access to knowledge and information, and enhanced local decision-making. This document was prepared within the context of the Communication for Sustainable Development Initiative (CSDI), an FAO programme supported by the Italian Ministry for the Envi ronment and Territory that promotes the use of communication methods and tools to meet today’s rural development challenges.

No results found.The chapter describes relevant approaches, trends, and challenges of applying Communication for Development to agricultural and to rural development in a changing world. It focuses on the experience generated by the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), starting with the first years when FAO was considered a leading agency in the discipline, followed by an analysis of the present situation, the perspectives, and the challenges for the future. The authors argue that there are new and favorable conditions for Communication for Development in the context of the changing social and political scene and that new economic and environmental challenges affecting rural areas demand new communication approaches and practice to be blended with the principles and participatory methods that have inspired the discipline. Today more than ever, there is a need for mainstreaming Communication for Development to contribute managing the structural transformation affecting rural areas and to bridge the divide of opportunities ensuring equal rights to communication through demand-led communication services dedicated to rural dwellers. This changing landscape also requires new policy and financial commitments on the part of development institutions and governments, as well as policy dialogue with interested parties, including producer and indigenous peoples’ organizations, representatives of women and youth, as well as the private sector. By facilitating the dialogue, the definition of priorities, and options for inclusive rural communication services, Communication for Development will contribute significantly to meeting the challenges of our changing world. -

No results found.This book addresses the demand for evidence-based approaches to rural communication services (RCS). It presents theoretical foundations of RCS and a series of case studies showcasing the appropriation of media by smallholders and the promotion of enabling policy environments. Building on the RCS approach promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the 12 contributions included in this book deal with three prominent dimensions: (1) the need for theoretical grounding and action research; (2) the importance of promoting equality and inclusiveness, balancing digital and non-digital communication; and (3) the importance of addressing capacity, infrastructure, institutionalization and policy in an integrated manner. The book also shows how theoretical contributions inform rural practice and demonstrates how RCS is grounded in and informed by theory. In addition, it highlights key areas for research, capacity development and policy support to operationalize RCS. In a nutshell, it deepens our understanding of how RCS can be inclusive and drive collaborative change.
