Strengthening Capacities of the Government of Andhra Pradesh to Support Farmers to Adopt Sustainable Agri-Food Systems - TCP/IND/3807 2024

Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about half the population in India, which is also one of the main producers of milk, legumes, jute, rice, wheat and cotton. Due to soil erosion, burning of crop residues and a high use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, it is essential to transition to sustainability to increase agricultural productivity and enhance both food and ecological security in the country. Agriculture in Andhra Pradesh depends mostly on rainfall, so the monsoon and seasonal conditions play a crucial role and have been highly affected by climate change, leading the State of Andhra Pradesh, as many others in India, to experience soil degradation, yield reductions and seasonal yield gaps, which have increased the costs of production. Furthermore, other safety concerns such as the COVID 19 pandemic affected agricultural value chains, giving rise to the need to modernize the agricultural sector with technologies and marketing strategies that will lead to profitable and sustainable production systems. To address these challenges, the Government of Andhra Pradesh (state government) launched farmer facilitation centres (FFCs) as an efficient platform to disseminate knowledge and provide farmers with services and assistance to improve year-round productivity, profitability and sustainability.

Developing Sustainable and Inclusive Agrifood Systems in the Northwest Region of Azerbaijan - GCP/AZE/014/EC 2023

The northwest region of Azerbaijan lends itself to agroand food tourism thanks to its cuisine, which has been recognized for its long and unique history. This type of tourism has the potential to create jobs and generate income for rural producers on the region, who have knowledge of local ingredients, recipes and products, but lack the communication mechanisms, producer buyer networks, management skills, food safety knowledge and access to markets and financing that are required to start and run a business. This project aimed to assist small and medium-scale farmers and producers in the Balakan, Gakhand Zagatalarayons in overcoming these challenges by: (i) introducing the concept of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) and Geographical Indications (GIs); (ii) establishing inclusive and efficient agrifood systems for six selected products (honey and other beekeeping products, dried meat, food products made of or containing hazelnuts, dried persimmon, persimmon molasses, and jams, including walnut jam); (iii) strengthening producer-buyer linkages and promoting agroand food tourism in the region; and (iv) establishing and piloting a community-driven system for agricultural advisory services (AAS).

Scaling Up and Strengthening the Coordination and Governance of Conservation Agriculture in Southern Africa - FMM/GLO/146/MUL 2024
    Also available in:

In the Southern Africa region, two major issues negatively affect crops: climate change and unsustainable farming practices. Both of these degrade soil and lead to low levels of productivity and production. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA), implemented through Conservation Agriculture (CA) practices, which address tillage, crop choice and land management, are a way to combat these issues and consequently increase crop production. Although these practices have been introduced in the region, their implementation is rather limited owing partially to the fragmented approach taken to CA promotion. This subprogramme was therefore formulated to strengthen CA partnerships and the coordination of CA programming, and to increase knowledge and experience sharing among existing networks.

Latin America and the Caribbean - Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2023
    Statistics and trends
    2023
    Also available in:

The 2023 edition of the Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean presents an update of the data and trends in food security and nutrition in recent years. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis and the conflict in Ukraine, as well as the economic slowdown, rising food inflation and income inequality have had an impact on regional figures. The most recent data shows that, between 2021 and 2022, progress was made in reducing hunger and food insecurity in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, the progress achieved is far from the targets established to meet SDG 2 of ending hunger. In addition, one in five people in the region cannot access a healthy diet and malnutrition in all its forms, including child stunting, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity continue to be a major challenge.

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2023
Urbanization, agrifood systems transformation and healthy diets across the rural–urban continuum
    2023
This report provides an update on global progress towards the targets of ending hunger (SDG Target 2.1) and all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2) and estimates on the number of people who are unable to afford a healthy diet. Since its 2017 edition, this report has repeatedly highlighted that the intensification and interaction of conflict, climate extremes and economic slowdowns and downturns, combined with highly unaffordable nutritious foods and growing inequality, are pushing us off track to meet the SDG 2 targets. However, other important megatrends must also be factored into the analysis to fully understand the challenges and opportunities for meeting the SDG 2 targets. One such megatrend, and the focus of this year’s report, is urbanization. New evidence shows that food purchases in some countries are no longer high only among urban households but also among rural households. Consumption of highly processed foods is also increasing in peri-urban and rural areas of some countries. These changes are affecting people’s food security and nutrition in ways that differ depending on where they live across the rural–urban continuum. This timely and relevant theme is aligned with the United Nations General Assembly-endorsed New Urban Agenda, and the report provides recommendations on the policies, investments and actions needed to address the challenges of agrifood systems transformation under urbanization and to enable opportunities for ensuring access to affordable healthy diets for everyone.

Outcomes and lessons learned from the Koronivia UNFCCC negotiations on agriculture and food security, and the way forward after COP 27

The Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA) was established at COP23 to address six topics in the agricultural sector's role in climate change. KJWA has contributed to sharing scientific and technical knowledge, but limitations remain in translating outcomes into concrete climate actions. The new four-year joint work on the implementation of climate action on agriculture and food security, which prioritizes ending hunger and considers national circumstances, includes the creation of an online portal for sharing information. The four-year agenda is shaped and broadened through the submission of views by parties, observers, and civil society and will be considered by SBSTA and SBI in June 2023.
