Synopsis (short abstract) Cereal production in Tajikistan, particularly wheat, has been steadily declining since a peak production in 1997. Last year's drought severely impacted the country's already fragile agricultural sector that has faced severe structural problems due in part to the civil strife and political instability of the mid 1990s. Furthermore, shortage of financial and technical resources has also resulted in a near collapse of the country's irrigation systems, agro-processing industries, agricultural input production and supply units, as well as in the severe deterioration of farm machinery and equipment. Reduced rainfall in 2000/2001 has further exacerbated the adverse conditions of the agricultural sector. It is in this context that the Government of Tajikistan requested FAO and WFP assistance in reviewing the country's food situation and outlook for 2001/02 marketing year. Consequently, an FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission was fielded from 19 June to 3 July to estimate the 2001 ce real harvest and cereal import requirement, including food and agricultural assistance needs, for the marketing year 2001/02.

    An FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission (CFSAM) visited the UN-administered Province of Kosovo (Kosovo) between 1 July and 7 July to: (i) assess prospects for crop production in 2001; (ii) review the overall food supply situation and prospects and (iii) re-examine the degree of vulnerability. The Mission's findings are based on crop and livestock data collected throughout the year by the FAO/WFP Food Security Surveillance Unit (FSSU), cross-checked by the Mission through discussi ons with bilateral and UN agencies, NGOs, the emerging UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) Department of Agriculture and the Municipal Directorates of Agriculture. Key informants with whom detailed semi-structured interviews were conducted included millers, traders and farmers, some of whom were already harvesting at the time of the Mission. Transects driven through 20 of the 30 municipalities of Kosovo gave ample opportunity for crop inspections, sample crop-cutting and general observations of the agr icultural and livestock situation. The Mission found that the determination and optimism exhibited by the farming community during the rapid recovery last year has been sustained during the 2000/2001 growing season.

    FAO/WFP CROP AND FOOD SUPPLY ASSESSMENT MISSION TO SERBIA (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF YUGOSLAVIA) - 8 August 2001 2001

    An FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission visited Serbia between 17 June and 30 June 2001 to: (i) assess prospects for crop production in 2001; (ii) review the overall food supply situation and prospects at the national level and (iii) determine the needs for food assistance during the marketing year 2001/2002. The Mission's findings are based on crop data provided by the Institute of Statistics, Belgrade, cross-checked against updated information from Chambers of Commerce, Agricultural , Water and Meteorological Institutes, NGOs and UN Agencies. Field visits through 45 municipalities in Vojvodina and Central Serbia afforded the opportunity for crop inspections, sample crop-cutting and detailed semi-structured interviews with key informants including farmers in the private and social sectors, managers of co-operatives, millers, traders, combine drivers and agricultural extension workers. Discussions with Serbian agricultural and economic specialists provided essential backgroun d on the current socio-economic situation and the effects of isolation, sanctions and the NATO intervention.

    FAO/WFP CROP AND FOOD SUPPLY ASSESSMENT MISSION TO ETHIOPIA - 9 January 2001 2001

    An FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission visited Ethiopia from 12 November to 13 December 2000 to estimate the production of the meher season cereal and pulse crops, forecast the 2001 belg season, assess food aid needs and identify broad classifications of beneficiaries and delivery mechanisms. This mission follows a particularly severe year with regard to food insecurity in Ethiopia, and the Horn in general, which necessitated a special regional humanitarian intervention, coordinated by the UN. In November 2000, six teams comprising two international consultants and four national consultants from FAO plus counterpart specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture visited all but four zones in the country. WFP joined two of these teams. Over a longer period, 22 teams comprising members from Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission (DPPC), WFP and other UN agencies, bilateral donor agencies and NGOs visited all regions, concentrating on the more vulnerable zones and woredas to determine the current and prospective situation regarding household food security. These two complementary assessment exercises overlapped in the field wherever possible.
