Synopsis (short abstract) Despite a late start of the spring season and the April and June civil conflict, the aggregate 2010 food crop production is estimated at normal levels, although significantly lower than the bumper harvest of 2009. The main wheat crop is put at 866 331 tonnes, similar to the average of the past five years but 18 percent down from 2009. Heavy rains in spring resulted in delayed sowing and reductions in the area planted. However, good precipitation in the remaining of the season offset the negat ive impact on yields of the late start of the planting. The reduction in wheat production mainly reflects diversion of land to more profitable fodder crops and lower yields due to shortages and increased costs of agricultural inputs, following the closure of the Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan borders in April. Livestock numbers are expected to increase in 2010 due to good pasture conditions and increased fodder crops production...

    Thanks to favourable rainfall overall, Madagascar¡¯s 2010 food crop output was generally good, particularly rice, which is estimated to be about 4.7 million tonnes, more than 4 percent over 2009. For the 2010/11 marketing season, the cereals supply and demand balance sheet shows a surplus of rice and root crops in cereals equivalent, but also a maize deficit as a result of lower production in the South, which will be covered by increased consumption of rice. It is estimated that 123 000 tonne s of wheat, which is not grown in the country, will have to be imported. Substantial amounts of rice will also have to be imported again, as has been the case in previous years...

    In DPRK, including the estimates for the 2010 main season harvest and forecast for the 2011 early season crops, a total of 5.33 million tonnes of staple food production from the cooperative farms, individual plots on sloping land and household gardens for 2010/11 is expected. This is about 3 percent higher than in 2009/10. When paddy is converted to milled rice, the above total production comes to 4.48 million tonnes. A substantial increase in production was expected due to some improvements in the availability of fertilizer, pesticides, operational tractors, diesel and electricity. This expectation, however, was frustrated by some adverse weather events. The winter of 2009/10 was unusually severe and prolonged which resulted in a low survival rate of winter wheat and delays in planting of spring crops and transplanting of main season paddy. Also, unusually intense rainstorms hit most of the country in late August and early September, causing localised flooding, crop loss and str uctural damage to irrigation canals and dams...
