In this Q1 2024 report, data from the World Reference Lab for Foot-and-Mouth Disease and global intelligence reveal concerning trends. The report highlights unexpected FMDV movements, including SAT 2 outbreaks in Algeria and O/EA-3 incursions in Libya. The emergence of SAT 2/V in Algeria raises questions, given its last detection in 1991. Additionally, samples from Kenya show diverse FMD serotypes. In East Africa, testing is underway for further samples from Ethiopia and Uganda. Elsewhere, South Africa reports SAT 1 and SAT 3 outbreaks, while in Asia, FMDV sequences from Indonesia underline the spread of the O/ME-SA/Ind-2001e lineage. FMD outbreaks in the Republic of Korea were recently reported.
