Synopsis (short abstract) The following are the authors abstracts of contributions presented at the Symposium. Most of these papers will be published separately in the African Journal of Tropical Hydrobiology and Fisheries - Editor J. Okedi, published by East African Literature Bureau (twice yearly), P.O.Box 30022, Nairobi, Kenya.Progress has been made in the evaluation of fishery resources in African inland waters since the earlier resource assessment seminars held in Jinja (Uganda) and Bujumbura (Burundi) 1971. A n umber of workers on various lakes are now using simple techniques to estimate the size of the stocks and the condition of the fisheries. Many of the results so far obtained agree well with the rough model based on the morpho-edaphic index. Such simple but rough methods may be more valuable at the early stages than more precise but more difficult methods. However, in some areas more precise estimates are now required because of indications of overfishing and a consequent need for immediate manage ment action in such waters.

The twenty-third session of the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission (EIFAC) was held in Wierzba, Poland, from 26 May to 2 June 2004, in concomitance with a Symposium on Aquaculture Development – Partnership between Science and Producer Associations. The session reviewed EIFAC’s activities since 2002 in the fields of fishery biology and management, aquaculture, protection of the aquatic resource, and social and economic issues. EIFAC revised and decided its future programme of work, and in particular the activities which should be carried out until the next session of the Commission in 2006. The twenty-fourth session will be preceded by a Symposium on Hydropower, Flood Control and Water Abstraction: Implications for Fish and Fisheries.
