Towards an architecture for open archive networks in Agricultural Sciences and Technology 2007
The AGRIS Network is an international initiative based on a collaborative network of institutions, whose aim is to promote free access to information on science and technology in agriculture and related subjects. The paper illustrates how the Open Access (OA) and the Open Archive Initiative (OAI) models can be used within the AGRIS Network as a means of solving the problems of dissemination and exchange of agricultural research outputs. The lack of adequate information exchange possibilities bet ween researchers in agricultural sciences and technology represents a significant weakness limiting their ability to properly address the issues of agricultural development. The OA model promotes the dissemination of research output at international, national and regional levels thus removing the restrictions placed by the traditional scientific publishing model. This paper presents the possibility to address the accessibility, availability and interoperability issues of exchanging agricultural research output.

Institutional and scientific co-operation, networking and capacity building in the field of food safety and quality
    Hungary and The Netherlands
    2002
This paper explains the situation in Hungary and The Netherlands regarding scientific co-operation, networking and capacity building in the field of food quality and safety. Specific details are given about institutional co-operation including exchanges between staff and students, collaborative projects in policy and science advancement, institutional and scientific networking projects and capacity building. Within a dynamic and fragile marketplace, with ever changing consumer expectations, the implications and application of a Pan-European approach to further scientific co-operation in food safety and quality are raised by this example.

There is great potential for integrated irrigation-aquaculture (IIA) in sub-Saharan Africa and this type of integration fits well into the water control and diversification components of the FAO Special Programme for Food Security (SPFS). Three international institutions interested in IIA and experienced in networking were reviewed: the Regional Association for Irrigation and Drainage, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture with its Eco-regional Programme for Humid and Sub-Humid Tro pics of Subsaharan Africa, and the West Africa Rice Development Association with its two regional research consortia, the Inland Valley Consortium and the Regional Rice Research Network. IIA field activities in Mali and Zambia were presented and IIA-related research was reported from Burkina Faso and Ghana. All countries indicated a high potential for IIA. Possible actors involved in IIA activities represent a wide variety of research and development agencies in each country. Information to faci litate IIA development is frequently lacking. Joining national networks into a regional network would expedite access to and exchange of information. The Workshop proposed the establishment of a regional IIA Network and elaborated on such potential network’s goal, objectives, themes, context of operation, structure and linkages.
