Synopsis (short abstract) A report of the twenty-sixth World Food Day celebration held at the FAO regional office in Bangkok in commemoration of the Organization's founding in 1945. This year’s theme highlights the need to invest in agriculture to tackle poverty and food insecurity. Highlights of the day include a keynote speech on the theme of the celebration by Tadao Chino, Senior Advisor, Nomura Research Institute and former President of the Asian Development Bank and the presentation of four awards to outstanding far mers from China, Myanmar, Pakistan and Thailand.

    This fact sheet describes the course that introduces the CFS Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems (also known as the CFS-RAI), a set of ten principles that apply to all types and sizes of agricultural investment including fisheries, forests and livestock. The principles address all stakeholders and apply to all stages of the value chain. As a soft law instrument, they are globally applicable and include actions to address a range of environmental, social and economic issues.

    In October 2011, the CFS requested the HLPE to undertake: “a comparative study of constraints to smallholder investment in agriculture in different contexts with policy options for addressing these constraints, taking into consideration the work done on this topic by IFAD, and by FAO in the context of COAG, and the work of other key partners. This should include a comparative assessment of strategies for linking smallholders to food value chains in national and regional markets and what can be l earned from different experiences, as well as an assessment of the impacts on smallholders of public-private as well as farmer cooperative-private and private-private partnerships” (CFS 37, Final report, October 2011).

Swaminathan, member of parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Chairperson, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation and presentation of five awards to outstanding farmers from Fiji, India, Indonesia, Mongolia and Thailand by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
