The Experts Meeting for the Re-establishment of the Network on Environment and Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (EAM) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) Committee on Aquaculture (CAQ) was held in Rome, from 7 to 9 December 2005. The meeting was attended by 13 experts from the region. The Network on Environment and Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (EAM), created in 1992 following the Mediterranean Regional Aquaculture Project (MEDRAP), ceased to operate as an effecti ve network in 1996. The present experts meeting took place following a decision by the GFCM at its twenty-ninth session. The meeting was called to update the terms of reference of EAM and identify short- and medium-term activities. The experts suggested that EAM be re-established as a subsidiary body of GFCM-CAQ. It was envisaged that the restructured EAM would work through the following four working groups dealing with: (i) harmonization of environmental regulation and standards for aquaculture ; (ii) scaling aquaculture-environmental interactions; (iii) integrating aquaculture within a coastal zone management framework; and (iv) public perception of aquaculture in relation to environment.

The fifth session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) Committee on Aquaculture (CAQ) was attended by delegates from eleven Members of the Commission. The session reviewed the status and trends of aquaculture in the region. It appraised the activities carried out during the intersessional period, especially the work performed by the Revitalization Project of the Information System for the Promotion of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (SIPAM) and the outcome of the two expert meetings, respectively on the re-establishment of the Network on Environment and Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (EAM) and on the merging of the Network on Technology and Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (TECAM) with the Network on Social, Economic and Legal Aspects of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (SELAM). The Committee agreed that a single subsidiary body, entitled Coordinating Meeting of the Ad Hoc Working Groups (CMWG), be established to replace these networks. It decided that th e CMWG will initially be supported by the following three Ad Hoc Working Groups, on: Marketing, Sustainability, and on Siting and Carrying Capacity. The Committee agreed on the membership, modus operandi and mandate for the CMWG and adopted terms of reference for the Coordinator of each working group. CAQ also reviewed and endorsed a short- and medium-term reference framework for the work of the working groups. It acknowledged the training activities carried out by the International Centre for A dvanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies/Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (CIHEAM/IAMZ). The Meeting provided an opportunity to review the status of aquaculture in the Mediterranean. It took note of the problems encountered by the sector due to the rapid extension of some countries, particularly in the field of pathology, utilized technologies and marketing. The representatives of the different networks created by the ex MEDRAP Project have presented reports on their activities and the Committee recommended measures to strengthen these networks.
