Synopsis (short abstract) This publication summarizes the proceedings of an international consultation held in Bangkok on 21-23 May 2014. The consultation meeting brought together stakeholder from over 20 countries representing the governments, national and international research agencies, civil society organizations, multilateral institutions, think tanks, private sector and regional and global networks. The meeting provided a platform to share experiences, debate issues of key concern, and provide guidance for the natu re of required response in different countries and growth scenarios. The meeting recognized the concerns about resource scarcity, growing pressure on feed resources, climate change and the need for more equitable development and recommended establishment of a multi-stakeholder platform to facilitate regional cooperation in pursuit of shared goals. It was further agreed that the process of creating such a community would involve identification of willing partners, agreeing on a common minimum age nda, putting in place an organizational structure, commitment of resources and a monitoring and accountability mechanism. This should be an open, voluntary and iterative process and such a coalition should be given time to evolve and establish credibility among stakeholders.

    As embedded in its Constitution, FAO's mandate is to raise the level of nutrition and standard of living of the people, secure sustainable improvements in efficiency of production and distribution of food and agricultural products, improve the condition of the rural population, contribute to an expanding world economy and ensure humanity's sustainable freedom from hunger. In this context, the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific set out to translate FAO's strategic objectives into five r egional priority issues which are (a) strengthening food and nutritional security, (b) fostering agricultural production and rural development, (c) enhancing equitable, productive and sustainable natural resource management and utilization, (d) improving capacity to respond to food and agricultural threats and emergencies and (e) coping with the impact of climate change on food and agriculture. This publication sets out the regional priorities for the region in detail to 2019 and the implementat ion strategy for achieving the results.

    Measuring progress towards sustainable agriculture 2021

    This paper presents a new methodological approach aimed at measuring progress towards sustainable agriculture in countries and across agri-food systems typologies, by measuring socio-economic and environmental dimensions with available national statistics, with sixteen indicators defined and constructed from FAOSTAT data. A trend analysis is carried out at country level over the time series 1961-2018, with country results aggregated by four agri-food systems typologies: traditional; land-intensive and capital-intensive mixed systems; and modern food systems. The analysis provides a novel framework for the analysis of progress in achieving sustainable agriculture by country and agri-food system type, that can be implemented effectively and allows for exploring solutions across development pathways.

    The product of a year-long effort, this document reiterates FAO’s global vision and mission in sustainable agriculture and food security, and articulates the elements of strategy that FAO and its member countries in Asia and the Pacific might adopt to realize them. Six thematic programme areas are identified to guide the Asia-Pacific region in national and collective actions towards achieving the World Food Summit target of halving the number of undernourished by 2015. These are: restructuring o f the agricultural sector; decentralizing governance in support of sustainable development; reducing vulnerability to disasters; promoting effective and equitable management, conservation and sustainable use of natural resources; strengthening biosecurity; and alleviating poverty in rice-based livelihood systems. Within each thematic area, the general rationale, goal, objectives, strategic elements, outcomes and impact indicators are given and an implementation strategy is outlined.
