Synopsis (short abstract) Can you imagine living without energy? It’s impossible! Our lives literally are surrounded by energy, but we don’t often stop to think about why energy is so important. We use energy to cook our food, to heat or cool our homes, for light when it’s dark, to move around and much more. Globally, people are using more and more energy. However, right now, not everyone has all the energy they need. Meanwhile, most of the energy that people use comes from burning energy sources that are damaging our planet and our health. To promote access to clean and renewable energy for all people, the period 2014–2024 has been declared the “Decade of Sustainable Energy for All”. The United Nations (UN) has been actively fighting to eradicate poverty and encourage sustainable development. In 2014, the UN created Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to stimulate action in 17 areas and transform the world. One of the goals is dedicated to sustainable energy – Goal 7 to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all (p. 9). There is enough clean renewable energy in the world for everyone; however we need to plan and work together to make sure that everyone can get energy when and where they need it.

    Under the Safe Access to Fuel and Energy (SAFE) programme, FAO has contributed to improving resilience and livelihoods for refugees and internally displaced people in 14 countries through four types of activities: clean cooking, forest management, renewable energy in agri-food chains and policy support.     Establishing residue supply chains to reduce open burning – The case of rice straw and renewable energy in Punjab, India 2022

    Open burning of crop residues in India is a serious issue that not only impacts human health but is also detrimental to soil health in the long term. According to the estimates from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, about 500 million tonnes of crop residues are generated annually. While a portion of these residues is used for various purposes, a larger portion is burnt in the fields. The problem seems to be specifically severe in Punjab where a large quantity of rice straw is nurnt after harvesting rice to prepare the field quickly and cheaply for wheat cultivation. It is in this background that the project aimed to support the local government in Punjab and the national government of India to use rice straw productively and avoid open burning. Rice straw is a useful resource that can be used in-situ to maintain soil fertility as well as ex-situ to produce value added products including energy. However, a key challenge in using crop residues, including rice straw, is to mobilize it in systematically. This report presents a model crop residue value chain that can support the collection, transport, storage of rice straw which can enable productive uses of rice straw. Moreover, it estimates the quantity of rice straw produced in each district in Punjab and further estimates the investment needed in developing a crop residue supply chain in the state. Finally, it also undertakes a techno-economic assessment of energy technlogies to identify the most profitable way to use rice straw to produce sustainable energy.

    Energy-Smart Food at FAO: An Overview 2012

    This paper presents FAOs work on energy in relation to specific components of the agrifood chain. It complements two recent publications, Energy-Smart Food for People and Climate Issues Paper and the policy brief, Making the Case for Energy-Smart Food. These publications presented the findings of a 2011 study commissioned by FAO that examined the linkages between energy and agrifood systems and their implications for food security and climate. The study looked at energy uses along the entire agr ifood chain from field to plate and the potential of agrifood systems to produce energy. Findings confirmed that agrifood systems use a large share of the global energy supply, rely heavily on fossil fuels to meet production targets and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. The study concluded that agrifood systems will have to become ?energy-smart? to meet future food and energy challenges, and recommended establishing a major long-term multi-partner programme on energy-smart food systems bas ed on three pillars (i) improving energy efficiency in agrifood systems, (ii) increasing the use of renewable energy in these systems and (iii) improving access to modern energy services through integrated food and energy production.
