Synopsis (short abstract) The development and adoption of land cover data standards are critical for supporting global efforts to address the challenges related to climate change, sustainable development, and disaster risk reduction. By providing consistent and interoperable land cover data, these standards can support decision-making processes at all levels, from local to global, and help to ensure that progress towards the UN Sustainability Goals is monitored and reported in a transparent and accountable manner.To support the process, FAO, and the National Research Council of Italy - Institute of Intelligent Industrial Technologies and Systems for Advanced Manufacturing (CNR-STIIMA), developed a new software “land characterization system software (LCHS)” version 1.0 based on international standard i.e. ISO 19144-2 land cover meta language. The LCHS software is designed to implement a system that can evolve with the ISO standard itself. This will guide and facilitate the land cover user community to prepare their land cover classes based on international standards.

    Agriculture can play an important role in climate change mitigation while contributing to increased food security and reductions in rural poverty. The Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool (EX-ACT) can estimate the mitigation potential of rural development projects generated from changes in farming systems and land use. The study presents and discusses the EX-ACT analysis performed on the World Bankfinanced Land Husbandry, Water Harvesting and Hillside Irrigation Project of the Government of Rwanda. Estim ates of the impact of project activities on greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration demonstrate that the implementation of the LWH project will provide additional environmental benefits by helping to mitigate climate change. Thus it reflects possible synergies between mitigation and rural development goals through a watershed approach.

    The ARRSP will help to achieve the long-term objective of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) within the World Bank’s Country Assistance Strategy (CAS). The project’s objective is to increase agricultural productivity and improve marketing of crops and animal products by smallholder farmers in targeted areas. Project activities will contribute to this objective by providing seed, planting materials and advisory services, improving rice production, ani mal production capacity and marketing infrastructure and supporting the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Rural Development in the DRC.

    Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are continuously under the threat from the adverse effects of climate change and land degradation impacts. Land degradation directly increases CO2 emissions, contributing to climate change and vice versa. The LDN Target Setting Programme (TSP) of the UNCCD has substantially contributed to land degradation receiving the policy attention and securing political commitments for addressing the obvious and immediate threats of climate change and natural disasters to SIDS. It has strengthened the availability and accessibility of data for assessing land degradation and enabled SIDS to set specific measurable science-based targets. LDN provides the framework for the sustainable development of human settlements in SIDS through policy, planning, design and regulatory instruments.
