The FAO Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (The Commission) has recognized the importance of conservation and sustainable use of animal genetic resources for food and agriculture (AnGR). The Commission approved the finalisation of the first Report on the State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources which will be presented at the First International Technical Conference on Animal Genetic Resources (September, 2007). The Commission views the Conference as important, both in terms of providing an excellent opportunity to reach agreement on how to best address priorities for the sustainable use and conservation of AnGR, and to raise awareness and appreciation of the various roles and values of these essential resources. Within the framework of these developments, and following a recommendation of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Animal Genetic Resources, FAO commissioned this study to assess how exchange practices regarding AnGR affect the various stakeholders in the livestock sector and to identify policies and regulatory options that guide the global exchange, use and conservation of AnGR. The aim of this report is to support informed and evidence-based decision-making by exploring a range of policy and regulatory options related to exchange, use and conservation of AnGR.
