Synopsis (short abstract) The description of the oceanographic conditions of the shelf waters off the southwest coast of India between Ratnagiri in the north and Tuticorin in the south for the period 1976-78 1s based on observations carried out along oceanographic sections located off Ratnagiri, Karwar, Kasaragod, Cochin, Quilon, Cape Comorin and Tuticorin. In accordance with the objectives of Phase II of the Project, more emphasis was given to improving our knowledge of the behavioural characteristics of the oil sardine and mackerel and also to evolving methodologies for fishery forecasting appropriate to Indian conditions. Hydrography/plankton/fishing surveys were conducted during the southwest monsoon to assess the intensity of upwelling and to establish possible correlations between the behaviour of commercially important pelagic fishes and the variations of environmental factors observed in space and time. Data related to the process of upwelling were collected mainly to evaluate the extent and intensity o f upwelling and also to verify the variations of certain physical parameters noted during the Phase I.

    Chilled seawater systems are a comparatively recent innovation. The Consultant was familiar with progress made on the Pacific coast of Canada where the development of systems for salmon and herring transport and storage has been intensive and CSW systems are now the most common method for short-term preservation of fish. Several attempts were made to introduce the handling of sardine and mackerel in shallow plastic boxes, which is the standard procedure in the Mediterranean sardine industry, and quality results were excellent. This method of handling did not, howeve~ prove practical for commercial use since the fishermen are used to handling in bulk and on deck. Moreover, refrigerated seawater systems were unfeasible not only as the capital cost was prohibitive for installation in the small vessels (30-45 ft), but also because they presented technical problems of maintenance and operation beyond the capabilities of the fishermen. Thus, it appeared that a chilled seawater system would i deally suit the present conditions of the growing purse seine industry of southwest India

    A review is made in this report of the resources of India from which national can be derived in terms of employment, nutritional needs and increased fishermen's as well as showing the viability of canning with reasonable returns on investment. The seafood industry in India has recorded a phenomenal growth in the course of the last 15 years, due almost entirely to investment by the shrimp processing sector, most productI/qf which are exported. Export earnings registered an impressive growth f rom Rs. 37.5 crore- in 1962 to a record of Rs. 1 797.3 crore in 1977. This represents an increase of nearly 50 times the 1962 value in 15 years. Frozen shrimp has been the main contributing factor and in 1977 accounted for 72 percent of the quantity and 87 percent of the value of seafood exports.

    Review Of Experiences With And Present Knowledge About Fish Aggregating Devices - BOBP/WP/23 1983

    A review of experiences worldwide and of present knowledge about fish aggregating devices (FADs) was carried out by the BOBP during 1981. Nearly 150 institutions and experts were requested to contribute. This paper draws on these replies as also on other published material. The paper describes a spectrum of FADs ranging from very simple and cheap traditional applications for nearshore waters to modern, highly sophisticated and expensive products for off-shore aggregation of tunas and tuna-l ike fishes. Some of the experimental designs described here are worth considering for indicative fishing trials. The preparation of this paper is an activity of the Bay of Bengal Programme for Small-Scale Fisheries Development, referred to in brief as BOBP. The BOBP is funded by the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and executed by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations. Countries bordering the Ba y of Bengal are members of the Programme. Its main aims are to develop, demonstrate and promote methodologies to improve the conditions of smallscale fisherfolk and to assess and monitor fishery resources.
