Book (stand-alone)Impact evaluation of agricultural interventions
A technical guide
2024Also available in:
No results found. The purpose of this guide is to provide suggestions on designing impact evaluation of agricultural interventions. The guide provides an overview of standard impact evaluation methods and highlights more recent techniques that can help address some methodological challenges, including the integration of spatial data in the agricultural context. The guide discussed the complexity of evaluating agricultural interventions, and the methodological and practical challenges posed by agricultural interventions. The guide also presented case studies for the different impact evaluation methods, including a case study that uses spatial data to evaluate agricultural outcomes. Specific issues that need to be considered in designing surveys in agricultural context and collecting agricultural data are also presented. Key aspects related to sampling and power calculations, as well as the integration of gender analysis in evaluation, are also highlighted in the last sections of the guide. While its content will need to be complemented with further existing resources on impact evaluation, this guide can be used as a starting point for understanding the fundamental issues in impact evaluation posed by agricultural interventions, and for locating some of the available relevant resources. -
Policy briefEnhancing welfare and livelihoods through agricultural transformation in Ethiopia 2022
Also available in:
No results found. This policy brief highlights the main findings of a study assessing the food security and livelihoods impacts of widespread agricultural interventions, primarily aiming at increasing agricultural yields. Results show that agricultural interventions are effectively associated with higher agricultural yields, better food security outcomes and adjustments in livelihood strategies. Further analyses show that the agricultural interventions actually affected different types of households differently: the most vulnerable households primarily benefited through food security improvements while more-endowed households adjusted their livelihood strategies. -
BookletLebanon: Impact assessment of the escalating hostilities in southern Lebanon on agriculture, food security and livelihoods
DIEM-Impact report, February 2024

No results found. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture in Lebanon, conducted a household survey between 31 October and 30 November 2023 using computer-assisted telephone interviews. These interviews were part of the FAO Data in Emergencies Monitoring (DIEM-Monitoring) System which monitors the impact of shocks on agricultural livelihoods and food security. The survey targeted the agricultural population using the sampling frame of agricultural holdings from the 2010 Lebanon Agricultural Census. Additional survey questions were added to assess the impact of the escalating hostilities in southern Lebanon on farmers’ agricultural livelihoods and food security.FAO established Data in Emergencies Impact (DIEM-Impact) to provide a granular and rapid understanding of the impact of large-scale hazards on agriculture and agricultural livelihoods using a variety of assessment methodologies, including primary and secondary information, remote sensing technologies, and FAO’s damage and loss methodology. DIEM-Impact presents a regularly updated and accessible state of food insecurity in fragile environments and helps underpin FAO's programming based on evidence.
