Journal, magazine, bulletinPacific Island countries: Impact of rising costs of food, feed, fuel, fertilizer and finance Bulletin, November 2022 | Issue #1 2022
Also available in:
No results found. The indirect impact of rising wheat prices and the impacts resulting from increased energy and transport costs and other goods are affecting Pacific Island Countries (PICs), significantly threatening Pacific governments’ ability to maintain their current food system pathways. As people in the Pacific struggle with covering the costs of rising food and fuel prices, their food security and livelihoods are put at further risk. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP) and other United Nations agencies, is supporting ten Pacific Island government authorities in increasing their technical capacity to analyse, predict, plan, and respond to the impacts of the global crisis of food, energy and finance on national food systems. The joint initiative aims at strengthening data collection and analysis, government capacity and cooperation with international financial institutions (IFIs) and development partners to understand, predict and respond to the impact of the war in Ukraine on agriculture and food security. This bulletin gives a snapshot of the on-going FAO and WFP joint work on data collection and analysis, reflecting unfolding impacts of the food, feed, fuel, fertilizer and finance (5F) crisis on agri-food systems in the Pacific throughout 2022. -
ProjectSupport to the Development of Multi-Country Programming Framework for the Pacific Islands (2023–2027) - TCP/SAP/3810 2025

No results found. In August 2021, during the 7th Pacific Heads of Agriculture and Forestry Services (HOAFS) meeting, the development of a Pacific Regional Agriculture and Forestry Strategy was endorsed. The Pacific Community (SPC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) were tasked with designing a process and foresight methodology for this strategy, to be presented at the 2022 Joint FAO and SPC Pacific Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry Meeting. Additionally, SPC and FAO were encouraged to support the region in adopting a strategic approach to transforming food systems and addressing climate change impacts on agriculture and forestry. With the FAO CPF for the Pacific Islands (2018–2022) and the UN Pacific Strategy (UNPS) expiring at the end of 2022, efforts were initiated to develop new frameworks for the next cycle. This work involved evaluations of the CPF and UNPS, alongside drafting the FAO Pre Common Country Analysis (Pre-CCA) and the UN Common Country Analysis for the Pacific Islands. Considering the complexities of the Pacific Subregion, with 14 small island nations and territories, coordination among development partners such as the SPC, United Nations and FAO is critical. At the project design stage, FAO aimed to actively participate in crafting the Pacific Regional Agriculture and Forestry Strategy and the Pacific UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2023-2027, alongside its next CPF by the end of 2022. -
Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetRole of fish in food security in selected Pacific Island Countries 2018

No results found.Pacific Small Island Countries (PICs) are unique in terms of geographical location, isolated and have limited diversity of food. Fish is the main source of protein. Although the amount and type of fish consumed varies based on factors such as geographical location and socio-economic status. Average national fish consumption ranges between 55 kg to 110 kg per person per year. This is almost 3–6 times the average global consumption of <20 kg per person per year. There are few challenges including limited data on fish consumption trend, poor cold chain management, depletion of fish resources and food safety.
