No results found.Food insecurity is a significant issue in Eswatini An estimated 92 percent of the adult population consume fewer than the recommended daily five servings of fruits and/or vegetables The country’s struggling economy, along with recurrent droughts due to climate change, are affecting subsistence farming, upon which the majority of the country’s population (approximately 1 5 million) is dependent Furthermore, the agriculture sector is a significant part of Eswatini’s economy, given that an estimated 70 percent of the rural population, 75 percent of whom occupy arable farming land that has low productivity due to drought, are employed through subsistence agriculture, in turn accounting for only 11 percent of total agricultural outputs The country is divided into four agroclimatic zones the Lubombo Plateau, which runs along the country’s eastern border, the Middleveld the Lowveld which runs in a strip from north to south, and the Highveld, a mountainous region to the west of the country and an extension of the Drakensburg Escarpment In this context, to best address food insecurity in the country, increased production and productivity by specialized producers would be required, along with improved consumer income and access from well supplied markets.
