    The seventh sixth session of the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) was held in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran, from 14 to 16 May 2013. The Commission reviewed a range of regional issues and intersessional activities of importance to the conservation and management of fisheries and aquaculture in the region. Members considered and endorsed the administrative and financial reports. The Commission noted the rich programme implemented over the intersessional period and reaffirmed that pr iority should be given to work on shared stocks and species supporting fisheries of common interest. The Commission reiterated the relevance of aquaculture as a priority, including marine cage culture. The Commission noted the significant FAO support to RECOFI’s work and that capacity development remained a critical issue in the region. The Commission discussed the work of the Working Group on Aquaculture (WGA) and the performance of the regional aquaculture Information System (RAIS), and the r eport of the Working Group on Fisheries Management (WGFM) including the outcome of the fifth and sixth meetings of the WGFM, regional fishery socio-economics, RECOFI participation in the Fishery Resources Monitoring System (FIRMS), by catch management and low impact fishing in the region. The Commission recognized the knowledge base established for fisheries and aquaculture spatial planning in the RECOFI region. The Commission noted that WGFM called for an urgent need to formulate a regional man agement plan for the narrow-barred Spanish mackerel and advised the WGFM to further develop the concrete management procedures. The Commission noted with approval the establishment and ongoing work of the RECOFI Task Group for fisheries socio-economics. The Commission commended and further encouraged the general and genuine commitment by Members to implement the Recommendation on Minimum Data Reporting. The Commission reiterated Member countries would have to ensure adequate funding for the Secr etariat in order to preserve the work of the Commission, as this is becoming increasingly essential for the sustainability of shared fishery resources and aquaculture development in the region. The Commission approved the programme of work for the WGA and WGFM for the next intersessional period and reconfirmed that eighth session of RECOFI will be hosted by the Republic of Iraq in May 2015.

    The fifth session of the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from12 to 14 May 2009. The Commission reviewed a range of regional issues and activities of importance to the conservation and management of fisheries and aquaculture. Members addressed intersessional activities and provided country reports. Administrative and financial reports were also considered. It was noted that as at 31 December 2008 eight Members had deposited their ins truments of acceptance for the RECOFI Agreement. The Commission discussed the report of the Working Group on Aquaculture (WGA) including the fourth meeting of the WGA, Regional Aquaculture Information System (RAIS), development of a regional strategy for aquatic animal health, sustainable marine cage aquaculture development and a legal and policy framework for aquaculture. The report of the Working Group on Fisheries Management (WGFM) was addressed in terms of the role of the Working Group, stock status reporting, review of capture fisheries statistics, improving the utility and diffusion of fisheries statistical data among Members and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing including port State measures. Members reviewed the structure and functioning of the Commission, its organization and modus operandi and terms of reference for RECOFI National Focal Points. In considering the programme of work and budget for the 2009–2010 biennium the Commission approved seven activities for implementation. A further seven projects were postponed for financial reason. would be held in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain, in May 2011.

    This document contains the report of the Sixth Meeting of the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) Working Group on Fisheries Management (WGFM), which was held in Doha, the State of Qatar from 5 to 8 November 2012. The WGFM addressed and made decisions on matters concerning relevant follow-up to fifth meeting of the RECOFI WGFM and to the Sixth Session of RECOFI that was held in Rome, Italy during the period from 10 to 12 May 2011. The status of the implementation of the fisheries manageme nt recommendation on minimum data reporting in recommendation RECOFI/6/2011/1 that entered into force on 1 January 2012 was discussed. The report on the RECOFI Workshop on Social and Economic Aspects of Fisheries in the RECOFI Region as well as the progress on the work of the Task Group for this activity was presented and discussed. The development of regional fisheries management plans with agreed operational objectives for fisheries management was outlined. The main outcomes of the Near East a nd North Africa Regional Consultative Meeting on Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries and its relevance to RECOFI were presented. RECOFI participation in the FIRMS Steering Committee meeting and national inventories of fisheries in RECOFI Members were considered. The status of RECOFI’s financial situation and its implications for implementing the approved Working Group on Fisheries Management workplan was discussed, as well as the priorities, and further to this, an update of the programme of work and budget for the biennium 2013–2014 was agreed. Finally, an update on the outcomes of the tripartite initiative on fisheries management cooperation in the northern area of RECOFI was presented. The next meeting of the WGFM will possibly be held in Kuwait in 2013.
