Planting of the 2001 paddy season is underway in some of the Northern Hemisphere countries but the bulk of the crop is yet to be planted pending the arrival of Monsoon rains on th e Asian continent. In the Southern Hemisphere and around the equatorial belt, this season’s main paddy crop is nearing completion. Following weak prices in the past two years, some countries are expected to lower rice area and to switch to more remunerative crops. Nonetheless, pending additional information and assuming normal seasonal weather patterns, world paddy production in 2001 is expected to decline only marginally from the previous season.

The 1999 paddy season is progressing well in the Northern Hemisphere countries under generally favourable conditions, while in the Southern Hemisphere and around the equatorial belt, harvesting of the 1999 main paddy crop season is virtually done. Production in several countries is expected to rebound from last season’s depressed level due to a combination of larger plantings and higher yields. A number of countries are anticipating record production. Based on crop estimates in the Southern Hemisphere and the crop progress reports in several countries in the Northern Hemisphere, FAO is tentatively forecasting global paddy output in 1999 to reach an all time high of 582 million tonnes, barring any unforeseen natural calamities.

The bulk of this season's rice crop is still to be planted in most of Asia, pending the arrival of monsoon rains, although planting of paddy for the 1999 season is underway in some of the Northern Hemisphere countries. In the Southern Hemisphere and around the equatorial belt, the 1999 main paddy crop season is nearing completion. Production there is expected to rebound as a result of a ea expansion and improved growing conditions compared to theprevious season. FAO's forecast for global paddy output in 1999 is for an increase of 1 to 2 percent over last year’s level. This forecast is still tentative and hinges on the timing, extent and distribution of the Asian monsoon.
