    This report gives extensive coverage of the status of industry and markets for the various types of wood-based panel in the Asia-Pacific region. The main factors affecting consumption and trade are discussed and the availability of various raw materials for panel production is investigated. The outlook for panel consumption and trade is presented on a subregional and country basis and predicted trade flows are given for the main importing and exporting countries in the region.

    A review of the historical developments of consumption, production and trade of forest products in the region followed by a forecast of future trends (1993-2010) through the use of a dynamic spatial equilibrium model. The forecasts indicate that the Asia-Pacific demand for forest products will continue to rise, as rapidly growing economies are concentrated in the region. The real prices of industrial roundwood and sawnwood are projected to increase slowly until the year 2010. The real prices of wood-based panels and of paper and paperboard are not predicted to change greatly.

    The range of efforts required to develop the full potential of NWFPs is wide indeed. Land-use and forest policies need to be evaluated and where necessary adapted to ensure that potential impacts on non-wood forest resources and products are taken into consideration. Increased research on the abundance, distribution, biology and ecology of non-wood forest resources is essential. Of particular importance are investigations into ways to improve the employment- and income-generating potential of NW FPs through better harvesting, storage, transport, processing, manufacturing and marketing. The articles in this issue of Unasylva explore various facets of the challenge of generating income through the sustainable management of NWFPs.
