    Thousands of consumer products around the world contain ingredients obtained from wild plants. Wild harvest accounts for some or all the harvest of the great majority of plant species in trade (between 60-90 percent). Wild-harvested plants often come from the most biodiverse ecosystems on earth and many have been used traditionally or by local communities for generations. While these products have global markets and provide critical sources of income, they can also have deep ties to particular cultures and places. Demand for wild plant ingredients is growing rapidly, having grown by over 75 percent in value over the past two decades. Thousands of harvested species are at risk mainly from a combination of overharvest and habitat loss: of the 21 percent of medicinal and aromatic plant species whose threat status has been assessed, 9 percent are considered threatened with extinction. Despite their ubiquity, importance, and the threats facing them, wild plant ingredients are often obscured from consumers and escape companies’ due diligence due to a lack of awareness and traceability. Best practice standards exist but have yet to capture a significant portion of the market. This report aims to address these challenges by making information on a selection of ‘flagship’ wild plant ingredients, the Wild Dozen, readily available and easy to understand. By offering this information without obligation to a specific prescription for follow-up action (e.g. through certification or policy change), it is hoped that a wide range of users will access the report as a first step towards responsible sourcing. Along with a broader update on the state of wild plants trade, the report provides a ‘profile’ on each of the Wild Dozen species, summarising key facts on production and trade. Each profile contains a traffic-light risk rating on biological and social factors, along with an overview of opportunities for responsible sourcing. The information is aimed at industry, consumers, policy-makers, investors, and practitioners, concluding with a summary of what these various stakeholders can do to contribute to a sectoral shift towards responsible sourcing of wild plant ingredients.

    Guidelines for African swine fever (ASF) prevention and control in smallholder pig farming in Asia

    African swine fever (ASF) is a highly fatal infectious disease of domestic and wild pigs of all breeds and ages with no effective vaccine or treatment. The incursion of ASF into Asia and the Pacific region has been a major concern as the region is the major pig production area, which produces over 58 percent of pigs globally (FAOSTAT). The concerns, therefore, are growing for its impacts on food security and economics as the virus is expanding towards more areas and countries in the region. As the disease continues to expand into new territories, preparedness and control activities need to be constantly adjusted to adapt to situations observed in the field that may be contrary to what was expected based on international standards or experiences from other parts of the world. National veterinary services face challenges in these complex situations, and so regional and international support is needed to fill capacity gaps required for ASF control and to facilitate dialogue among key stakeholders. Through various regional and national consultation meetings, affected countries have requested technical support to make available relevant technical guidelines for ASF control that are practical especially for smallholder pig farmers in the context of Asia (SO5). This Farm biosecurity, slaughtering and restocking] is the third of the series of the “Guidelines for African swine fever (ASF) prevention and control in smallholder pig farming in Asia” which guides biosecurity, slaughtering and restocking practice in smallholder pig farming system which are designed for use by national and/or central veterinary authorities, farmers and relevant stakeholders, especially focusing on Southeast Asian pig industry.

    L’édition 2024 de La Situation mondiale des pêches et de l’aquaculture met à l’honneur la transformation bleue en action, qui prend corps dans les activités et les initiatives menées par la FAOen collaboration avec les membres, les partenaires et les principales parties prenantes. Elle vise la prise en compte des produits alimentaires aquatiques dans la sécurité et la durabilité alimentaires mondiales, le développement des activités de promotion des politiques et de recherche scientifique, ainsi que le renforcement des capacités, la diffusion des pratiques durables et des innovations technologiques, et l’appui à la participation des communautés.La première partie de la présente édition de La Situation mondiale des pêches et de l’aquaculture fait fond sur les améliorations considérables apportées aux outils et aux méthodes de collecte, d’analyse et d’évaluation des données afin de présenter l’évaluation la plus récente de la production et de l’utilisation des pêches et de l’aquaculture dans le monde. La deuxième partie porte sur le rôle de la FAO et de ses partenaires pour ce qui est de catalyser les changements porteurs de transformation qu’il faut opérer afin de favoriser l’expansion et l’intensification de l’aquaculture, une gestion efficace des pêches mondiales et la modernisation des chaînes de valeur des produits aquatiques.La troisième partie est consacrée aux défis et aux possibilités liés au potentiel inexploité des poissons entiers et de leurs sous-produits pouvant améliorer la sécurité alimentaire et la nutrition, et qui sont susceptibles d’avoir un fort impact dans ce domaine. Cette partie décrit le rôle des systèmes alimentaires aquatiques dans la recherche de solutions cruciales qui soient respectueuses du climat, de la biodiversité et de l’environnement, et souligne combien il est important de prendre en compte ces systèmes dans les processus nationaux et multilatéraux. Elle donne aussi un aperçu des évolutions qui se profilent à l’horizon 2032, compte tenu des projections.L’édition 2024 de La Situation mondiale des pêches et de l’aquaculture présente les informations les plus récentes, fondées sur des éléments factuels, et apporte des éclairages stratégiques,scientifiques et techniques sur les défis, les possibilités et les innovations qui déterminent le présent et l’avenir de ce secteur. Elle s’adresse à un éventail large et grandissant de décideurs, degestionnaires, de scientifiques, de pêcheurs, d’agriculteurs, de commerçants, de militants de la société civile et de consommateurs.
