    The population of the world is steadily growing. Most of this population growth is concentrated in cities and urban areas, which means, 68 percent of the world’s 9.7 billion inhabitants will be urban dwellers by 2050. However, many of those currently living in cities especially, though not exclusively, in the Global South, are malnourished, impoverished and food insecure. Urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) is a vital strategy for building the resilience of cities’ food supply, reducing poverty and increasing employment, improving nutritional outcomes, and mitigating environmental degradation of urban spaces. While UPA is no silver bullet, when combined with effective city-region planning, the food system can more effciently meet the needs of diverse actors in urban areas. To provide additional insights into how UPA is managed as input for the “Urban and peri-urban agriculture: from production to food systems”, Rikolto conducted a series of case studies in six cities around the world, which are Quito (the Republic of Ecuador), Leuven (the Kingdom of Belgium), Dakar (the Republic of Senegal), Arusha (the United Republic of Tanzania), Surakarta (the Republic of Indonesia) and Tegucigalpa(the Republic of Honduras). This report first gives detailed accounts of each city and its UPA policies, challenges and practices. These are grouped according to the themes of land (availability, tenure); water(irrigation, access); labour(seasonal versus full-time, worker profile); finance (expenses, revenues, access to credit); agronomy(UPA practices, technical assistance) andvalue chain (commercialization, availability of inputs, consumer profiles). While policy mechanisms and support interventions are included among these themes, a policy overview presents the final theme of governance. These city accounts are followed by a comparative overview of all six cities and culminate in generalizable lessons-learned, interesting findings, and actionable recommendations for planners and policy-makers.

    Solomon Islands is comprised of over 1 000 islands with a population that grows at a rate of 2.3 percent annually. In this context, there is a need to ensure that the personal health of the country’s citizens is supported through the consumption of affordable and nutritious food containing vital vitamins and protein, and that these foods are accessible. In 2009, in Solomon Islands, just under 20 percent of the population lived in urban centres. In 2017, this figure had increased to 23.3 percent, with the urban population growing at twice the rate of the rural population. Increased urbanization is accompanied by changing patterns of food consumption with consequent health implications, including a rise in non communicable diseases. Furthermore, climate change and disaster risk management are significant issues given the current and future impacts expected, and the associated risks posed to natural ecosystems such as coastal and marine environments, fisheries, agriculture, water resources, health, biodiversity, infrastructure, and industry. In addition, COVID-19 impacted food production and related food supply chains for food systems in Honiara and the provinces. In these circumstances, the promotion of local food consumption for healthy diets has been identified as a priority by the government.

    The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2014 presents updated estimates of undernourishment and progress towards the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) and World Food Summit (WFS) hunger targets. A stock-taking of where we stand on reducing hunger and malnutrition shows that progress in hunger reduction at the global level and in many countries has continued but that substantial additional effort is needed in others. The 2014 report also presents further insights into the suite of food security indicators introduced in 2013 and analyses in greater depth the dimensions of food security – availability, access, stability and utilization. By measuring food security across these dimensions, the suite of indicators can provide a detailed picture of the food security and nutrition challenges in a country, thus assisting in the design of targeted food security and nutrition interventions. Sustained political commitment at the highest level is a prerequisite for hunger eradication. It entails placing food security and nutrition at the top of the political agenda and creating an enabling environment for improving food security and nutrition. This year’s report examines the diverse experiences of seven countries, with a specific focus on the enabling environment for food security and nutrition that reflects commitment and capacities across four dimensions: policies, programmes and legal frameworks; mobilization of human and financial resources; coordination mechanisms and partnerships; and evidence-based decision-making.

    Reducing inequalities for food security and nutrition

    The report “Reducing inequalities for food security and nutrition” has been developed by the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE-FSN) following the request by the United Nations Committee on World Food Security (CFS) as included in its Programme of Work (MYPoW 2020-2023). In particular, the CFS requested the HLPE-FSN to develop a report to: (i) analyse evidence relating to how inequalities in access to assets (particularly land, other natural resources and finance) and in incomes within food systems impede opportunities for many actors to overcome food insecurity and malnutrition; (ii) analyse the drivers of inequalities and provide recommendations on entry points to address these; and (iii) identify areas requiring further research and data collection. This report will inform the ensuing CFS thematic workstream on inequalities, aiming at addressing the root causes of food insecurity with a focus on those “most affected by hunger and malnutrition”.

    What will be needed to realize the vision of a world free from hunger and malnutrition? After shedding light on the nature of the challenges that agriculture and food systems are facing now and throughout the 21st century, the study provides insights into what is at stake and what needs to be done. “Business as usual” is not an option. Major transformations in agricultural systems, rural economies, and natural resources management are necessary. The present study was undertaken for the quadrennial review of FAO’s strategic framework and for the preparation of the Organization Medium-Term plan 2018-2021.
