Book (series)Report of the 31st Session of the Committee on Fisheries, Rome, Italy, 9-13 June 2014 2015The Committee reviewed issues of an international character, as well as the FAO programme in fisheries and aquaculture and their implementation. The Committee expressed its praise and support for the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) 2014 publication, and emphasized the need for further measures to rebuild fish stocks. The Committee, while commending the new web-based questionnaire on the implementation of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (the Code), called upon F AO to further develop and review the questionnaire. While noting the progress made by the Members in implementing the Code and related instruments, the Committee underscored the need to continue supporting developing countries. The Committee acknowledged efforts being made by Members in combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing and emphasized the importance of the coming into force of the 2009 Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate IUU Fishing (PSMA) a s soon as possible. The Committee requested FAO to expand its efforts to effectively implement the International Guidelines on Bycatch Management and Reduction of Discards. The Committee endorsed the Voluntary Guidelines for Flag State Performance (VGFSP). The Committee reiterated its support for the Global Record’s continued development. The Committee endorsed the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Gui delines) and agreed to dedicate them to Ms Chandrika Sharma, the Executive Secretary of the International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF).

No results found.This brochure documents the challenges of combatting and eliminating IUU fishing in Asia-Pacific and then sets out the national, regional and international responses to those challenges. The effects of IUU fishing can be severe, particularly for coastal and small island developing states heavily dependent on fisheries. It has adverse impacts on national economies, on peoples’ livelihoods—especially of individual small-scale fishers in poor coastal communities in developing countries— on food security, and on the environment. It typically degrades the environment, inhibits stock rebuilding efforts and exacerbates the decline of many fisheries. The brochure presents FAO's work with countries, partners and regional fishery bodies in Asia-Pacific to ensure that fisheries can be made sustainable for present fishers and future generations, and that fisheries provide a safe and equitable environment in which to work. FAO encourages improved cooperation between countries, legal mechanisms for landing of fish across borders, agreements to report foreign vessels landing fish, joint controls of dual flagging, standardization of vessel markings, and harmonization of catch documentation. In concise summaries, the brochure explains the binding and non-binding instruments negotiated by member countries that can help eliminate IUU fishing and aim to protect the marine and inland waters resources of fisheries. -

No results found.The content of the brochure presents an overview of the Legal template "Implementation of Port State Measures - Legislative template, framework for procedures, role of regional fisheries management organizations", which provides a legislative template and related information for use by port States, as appropriate, to facilitate initial steps, and can be adapted to different legal systems, institutions and instruments. The objective is twofold: to meet those challenges by providing generic legisl ative templates for the development of national legislation; and to explain broader context of port State measures. It also introduces a framework for procedures, and explains the role of RFMOs, including CMMs for tuna and other select RFMOs.
