A Symposium on Post-Harvest Fish Technology was held on 21 and 22 October 1990 in Cairo, Egypt, in conjunction with the Eighth Session of the Committee for Inland Fisheries of Africa (CIFA). The Symposium reviewed the present state of post-harvest fish technology with special reference to inland fisheries in Africa which are generally traditional, small-scale fisheries. It also reviewed the possibilities and constraints with regard to improving the role of the inland fisheries post-harvest secto r in generating income and in providing food. Review papers are included on the kinds and levels of post-harvest losses, on traditional and modern post-harvest technologies, on the present and potential role of inland fish in income generation and in food consumption. Papers also include country overviews and specific topics such as utilization of certain species, packaging, marketing and credit.

The fourth Meeting of Professionals/Experts in support of Fish Safety, Technology, and Marketing in Africa was jointly organized by the Products, Trade and Marketing Branch of FAO’s Fisheries and Aquaculture, Policy and Economics Division, and the FAO Regional Office in Accra, Ghana. The meeting reviewed progress in post-harvest fish utilization in Africa and made recommendations to FAO, its Members and institutes interested in fish utilization in Africa. In particular, the experts reviewed fresh or live fish handling, fish processing, post-harvest loss assessment, quality and safety, and marketing and socio-economic issues. The meeting included: a presentation by the secretariat of a report on progress and events since the workshop held in 2011; presentation of 27 papers; and a field trip to a fishing community. The report includes the recommendations as well as the papers that were made available to the experts.

Review Of Experiences With And Present Knowledge About Fish Aggregating Devices - BOBP/WP/23 1983
    Also available in:
    No results found.

A review of experiences worldwide and of present knowledge about fish aggregating devices (FADs) was carried out by the BOBP during 1981. Nearly 150 institutions and experts were requested to contribute. This paper draws on these replies as also on other published material. The paper describes a spectrum of FADs ranging from very simple and cheap traditional applications for nearshore waters to modern, highly sophisticated and expensive products for off-shore aggregation of tunas and tuna-l ike fishes. Some of the experimental designs described here are worth considering for indicative fishing trials. The preparation of this paper is an activity of the Bay of Bengal Programme for Small-Scale Fisheries Development, referred to in brief as BOBP. The BOBP is funded by the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and executed by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations. Countries bordering the Ba y of Bengal are members of the Programme. Its main aims are to develop, demonstrate and promote methodologies to improve the conditions of smallscale fisherfolk and to assess and monitor fishery resources.
