No results found.The annual Joint Meeting of the FAO Panel of Experts on Pesticide Residues in Food and the Environment and the WHO Core Assessment Group on Pesticide Residues was held in Rome, Italy, from 21 to 30 September 2010. The FAO Panel of Experts had met in Preparatory Sessions from 16 to 20 September. The Meeting was held in pursuance of recommendations made by previous meetings and accepted by the governing bodies of FAO and WHO that studies should be undertaken jointly by experts to evaluat e possible hazards to humans arising from the occurrence of pesticide residues in foods. During the meeting the FAO Panel of Experts was responsible for reviewing pesticide use patterns (use of good agricultural practices), data on the chemistry and composition of the pesticides and methods of analysis for pesticide residues and for estimating the maximum residue levels that might occur as a result of the use of the pesticides according to good agricultural practices. The WHO Core Asse ssment Group was responsible for reviewing toxicological and related data and for estimating, where possible and appropriate, acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) and acute reference doses (ARfDs) of the pesticides for humans. This report contains information on ADIs, ARfDs, maximum residue levels, and general principles for the evaluation of pesticides. The recommendations of the Joint Meeting, including further research and information, are proposed for use by Member governments of the respective agencies and other interested parties. -

The Meeting evaluated 33 pesticides, including 8 new compounds and 3 compounds that were re-evaluated within the periodic review programme of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR), for toxicity or residues, or both. The Meeting allocated ADIs and ARfDs, estimated more than 300 maximum residue levels and recommended them f or use by CCPR, and estimated STMR and highest residue (HR) levels as a basis for estimating dietary intake. The Meeting also estimated the dietary intakes (both short-term and long-term) of the pesticides reviewed and, on this basis, performed dietary risk assessments in relation to their ADIs or ARfDs. Cases in which ADIs or ARfDs may be exceeded were clearly indicated in order to facilitate the decision-making process of CCPR. The rationale for methodologies for long- and short-term dietary risk assessment are described in detail in the FAO manual on the submission and evaluation of pesticide residue data for the estimation of maximum residue levels in food and feed. -

No results found.During the Meeting, the FAO Panel of Expert s was responsible for reviewing residue and analytical aspects of the pesticides under considerati on, including data on their metabolism, fate in the environment, and use patterns, and for estimating th e maximum levels of residues that might occur as a result of use of the pesticides according to good ag ricultural practice. The estimation of MRLs and supervised trials median residue (STMR) values for commodities of animal origin was elaborated. The WHO Core Assessment Group was responsible for reviewing toxicological and related data in order to establish ADIs, and ARfDs, where necessary and possible.

No results found.The global catch of the principal tuna market species (albacore, bigeye, bluefin (three species), skipjack and yellowfin) in 2010 was 4.3 million tonnes and they contributed to about 8 percent of global fish exports. Tuna is mainly marketed in fresh, chilled, frozen or canned form. However, the tuna loin and canning industry generates a considerable amount of by-products and the practice of utilization of these by-products varies in different geographical regions. In this publication, there are case studies of utilization from Asia, Europe and Latin America. Thailand is one of the largest producers of canned tuna and the by-products are mainly utilized as tuna meal, tuna oil and tuna soluble concentrate. In the Philippines, most of the canning industry by-products are converted to tuna meal, but black meat is also canned and exported to neighboring countries. Edible tuna by-products from the fresh/chilled tuna sector, like heads and fins, are used for making soup locally and visceral o rgans are utilized to make a local delicacy or for fish sauce production. Scrape meat and trimmings are also used for human consumption. In Spain and Ecuador, by-products go to the fish and oil industry and the increasing demand for these commodities, due to the growth of the aquaculture industry, drives the fishmeal and fish oil industry. However, since these are used mainly as animal feeds, they indirectly contribute to food production. -

No results found.Behind the new-look Non-Wood News is the usual wealth of information from the world of NWFPs. The Special Features section covers two different aspects of NWFPs: a specific product (bamboo) and a developing market (cosmetics and beauty care). Bamboo is versatile: it can be transformed, for example, into textiles, charcoal, vinegar, green plastic or paper and can also be used as a food source, a deodorant, an innovative building material and to fuel power stations. Reports indicate that natural c osmetics and beauty care are a huge global market, with forecasts indicating an annual growth of 9 percent through 2008. The Special Feature on Forest cosmetics: NWFP use in the beauty industry builds on this and includes information industry interest and marketing strategies (consumers are being drawn to natural products and thus their content is emphasized). As can be seen from the articles on shea butter in Africa and thanakha in Myanmar, many societies have always used and benefited from nat ural cosmetics. This issue includes other examples of traditional knowledge, such as the uses of the secretions of a poisonous tree frog in Brazil and the use by the traditional healers in India of allelopathic knowledge. -

Save Food! has been co organized by Interpack2011 and FAO, aiming to raise awareness on global food losses and waste. In addition, Save Food! brings to the attention of the international packaging industry the constraints faced by the small- and medium-scale food processing industries in dev eloping countries to obtain access to adequate packaging materials which are economically feasible.
