The Asia-Pacific Regional Action Plan to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics represents a concerted effort by governments and the implementing partners to respond to the increased requirements for agricultural statistics in the twenty-first century. It represents a ground breaking effort with two essential goals: (i) halt the decline in the content and quality of agricultural production statistics; and (ii) meet the emerging data requirements not only to support policy decisions about the linkage of agriculture to poverty and the environment, but also to monitor how a decision in one area affects the other areas. The Global Action Plan provides the framework and steps for its implementation.

Innovation has a high potential for increasing productivity and farmers’ income,l and consequently reducing poverty and improving food security. However several tropic al countries lack the resources and capacities to suitably develop their agricultural innovation systems. To address this gap, the g20 established the tropical agriculture platform (tap), a multilateral dynamic facilitation mechanism, which fosters better coherence and greater impact of capacity development for agricultural innova tion systems in tropical countries.
