Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetReinforcing Capacities for Stability
Strengthening natural-resource management capacity to restore agriculture in fragile contexts
2019Also available in:
No results found.Conflict has a significant impact on development efforts, severely affecting the economies of entire nations and endangering people’s food security and nutrition. Food insecurity can, in turn, exacerbate tensions and increase the risk of future conflict. While environmental factors are rarely, if ever, the sole cause, the exploitation of natural resources and related environmental stresses can feature in all phases of the conflict cycle, from contributing to the outbreak and perpetuation of violence to undermining prospects for peace. Natural resources management, especially land and water management, becomes a critical challenge in conflict or post-conflict situations, aggravated by climate change and land degradation. Strengthening the natural resources management system and information is widely acknowledged to be key to the wider process of peacebuilding and sustainable development. This programme aims to bolster the knowledge and skills base in natural resources management and lay the foundation for a system that not only responds to the immediate needs of the post-crisis reconstruction process, but also guarantees sustainability in the long term. Reinforcing capacities is critical where conflict has often eroded human capital and weakened institutional capacity. The programme will identify the capacity gaps and provide a comprehensive and tailor-made suite of training opportunities to a wide and diverse audience at country level. -
Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetIraq: Reinforcing Local Capacities for Stability
Restoring sustainable agriculture and irrigation systems
2019Also available in:
No results found. The Iraq conflict has resulted in huge population movements and the loss of personal assets, crops, livestock production and food supplies. The conflict has also caused damage and destruction to water systems, irrigation facilities and agricultural infrastructure, as well as the disruption of value chains. In response, the Government of Iraq has formulated the Iraq Reconstruction and Development Framework, which aims to rebuild the agricultural sector to provide jobs and income in rural and peri-urban areas, allowing millions of internally displaced people to return home. The initiative will make a major contribution to the UN’s two-year Iraq Recovery and Resilience Programme by rebuilding agriculture on a sustainable basis, with an emphasis on the social dimension, improving food security and nutrition, supporting livelihoods and reducing poverty by restoring irrigation systems and crop and livestock production. Interventions will necessarily be informed by a conflict sensitivity analysis to understand local dynamics, including peace and conflict drivers, in order to ensure the most appropriate programme design and identify opportunities where local peace objectives can also be supported. -
Book (stand-alone)Syrian Arab Republic: Capitalization of the rehabilitation of Al-Rastan irrigation network study
Smallholder support programme
2023Also available in:
No results found. The rehabilitation of the northern part of Homs-Hama irrigation network under the European Union-funded smallholder support programme in the Syrian Arab Republic was designed within the context of supporting agricultural productivity and sustainable use of water resources. The comprehensive multidimensional capitalization study led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) aimed at reviewing the intervention’s achievements at different levels, comparing these achievements against plans, and assessing the impacts of the rehabilitation of the irrigation network in Al-Rastan on agriculture, natural resources, and socioeconomic status of the targeted communities. This is to identify further pathways for improving the performance of irrigation management and sustaining natural resources while strengthening the resilience of smallholder farmers.
