Synopsis (short abstract) Countries around the world, including Kenya, are improving their national forest monitoring systems (NFMS) in response to the growing global demand for high integrity carbon credits. This demand is demonstrated by initiatives like the Lowering Emissions by Accelerating Forest finance (LEAF) Coalition, which commits to purchasing emission reductions. In order to sell carbon credits to LEAF, countries need to have reliable forest data that meets new carbon standards. The availability of this data is crucial for accessing carbon finance, which in turn supports efforts to address climate change and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in line with the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (REDD+) approach. In response to this, the IMPRESS project aimed to create a globally applicable method for forest monitoring. Focusing initially on Kenya as a pilot case, its aim was to establish robust forest monitoring systems, enabling participation in Architecture for REDD+ Transactions (ART) REDD+ Environmental Excellence Standard (TREES) and LEAF.

    Since 2008, Ecuador has developed several initiatives to implement and strengthen the country’s National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS) to improve the mechanisms for collecting information related to its national forest heritage, recognizing nature as a subject of rights and declaring forests as fragile ecosystems that require special treatment. This case study explains how Ecuador’s National Forest Monitoring System has enabled access to results-based payments. It was developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) through the AIM4Forests: Accelerating Innovative Monitoring for Forests programme, thanks to the financial support from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

    Integrating forest and landscape restoration into national forest monitoring systems 2021

    This document, based on the Voluntary Guidelines on national forest monitoring (VGNFM), provides a series of good practices organised into sixteen steps to facilitate the integration of the monitoring process to officers responsible for forest and landscape restoration (FLR) and the national forest monitoring system (NFMS). An inter-institutional work is proposed with key stakeholders to discuss the new information needs according to the approach and modalities of FLR implementation. Based on these needs, indicators, metrics, and monitoring attributes are organised.

    This document builds on the brief paper presented at the 7th Meeting of the UN-REDD Programme Policy Board, held in Berlin, October 2011 (UNREDD/PB7/2011/13), which lays out ways to consider the REDD+ monitoring and information provision needs in the broader context of national development and environmental strategies, at the implementation level. The purpose of this document is to describe the elements in National Forest Monitoring Systems (NFMSs) as they relate to REDD+ under the United Nation s Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and to describe the UN-REDD Programme approach to Monitoring and Measurement, Reporting and Verification (M & MRV) requirements. This paper is presented in a series of sections discussing the various elements of relevant texts of the UNFCCC and the methodological recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This approach aims to allow the end-user to consider the implications of the implementation of REDD+ activities in distinct national contexts, and the various steps involved.
