No results found.This Guide aims to assist indigenous peoples and their organizations on how to use the Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security1 (hereafter “Right to Food Guidelines” or “Guidelines”) to promote their own interests in the area of food security. It also intends to increase awareness and improve understanding among development workers as well as United Nations (UN) staff, government official s and indigenous peoples themselves, of linkages between issues affecting indigenous peoples and the Right to Food Guidelines.2 The Guide is thus mainly about using the Right to Food Guidelines as an instrument to advocate and lobby in favor of indigenous peoples’ interests. The Right to Food Guidelines were adopted unanimously by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Council in 2004. They represent an action plan, reflecting a consensus among FA O members on what needs to be done in relevant policy areas to promote food security through a human rights-based approach. The Right to Food Guidelines provide guidance on areas and types of actions the state should take in order to meet its obligations under the right to food, and at the same time indicate ways for indigenous peoples to be more active to work towards realizing their right to food. -

No results found.FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and other development partners are working together with countries to prepare Voluntary Guidelines that will provide practical guidance to states, civil society, the private sector, donors and development specialists on the responsible governance of tenure. By setting out principles and internationally accepted standards for responsible practices, the Voluntary Guidelines will provide a framework and point of reference that stakeholde rs can use when developing their own policies and actions. Regional Consultations on the proposed Voluntary Guidelines are an important part of the process. They bring together regional representative, multidisciplinary groups to assess regional priorities and issues that should be considered when the Voluntary Guidelines are an important part of the process. The regional consultation for the Pacific Islands was hosted by the Government of Samoa, and was opened by Mr Taulealeausumai Laavasa Malua, Chief Executive Officer, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Samoa. The consultation was co-organized by the University of South Pacific, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, and the FAO Subregional Office for the Pacific Islands. It was attended by 43 people, from 12 Pacific countries, who combine d their broad range of expertise to identify the issues contained in the assessment for the Pacific Region. Participants were drawn from the public sector, civil society, private sector and academia, and came from Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. In addition, people from the Federated States of Micronesia, Niue and Papua New Guinea were invited but were unable to attend. -

It aims at strengthening the recognition and legal protection of customary tenure systems in the country in line with the key principles of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security(VGGT) (FAO/CFS, 2012).
