During the last quarter of 2020, Regional Agricultural Research and Extension Organisations (RREO) in Africa, Asia, and Latin America jointly carried out rapid appraisals to map the innovation environment and identify and document initiatives aimed at strengthening Agricultural Innovation Systems (AIS). The focus was on functional capacity development with a view to exploring ways in which RREO can support the development of these capacities and integrate them with technical capacities. A combination of literature reviews, case studies, and stakeholder surveys was used to gather information. The results were documented in three separate reports which are available from the RREO. In the present document, key findings from the regional reports are presented and discussed in this report.

In Eastern Africa, over three-quarters of the population cannot afford healthy diets, imposing high social and economic impacts on most countries. Therefore, transforming agrifood systems is critical to achieving food security and affordable, healthy diets for improved nutrition. One way FAO supports the agrifood system transformation is through the capacity development of relevant stakeholders to mainstream nutrition into national policies, programmes, strategic and investment plans. Training activities are predominantly carried out in person, but in 2020, these were suspended due to the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) crisis. To meet the ongoing needs, the FAO Sub-Regional Office for Eastern Africa continued its capacity development initiatives through innovative modalities, such as the blended learning approach. The blended learning approach combines aspects of online and face-to-face instruction and was used for trainings in two countries: Eritrea and Somaliland. This brochure contains good practices and lessons learned from these trainings that can be used to inform the planning of similar capacity development activities in the future.

Among the activities, the case study will emphasize on how universities, private companies and producer organizations, from several countries, collaborate to develop capacities and raise awareness on topics related to Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forest in the context of national food security and Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems. Further key results focus on the generation and dissemination of knowledge products as well as the assessment and systematization of good practices on food security, nutrition governance, rural economics and climate smart agriculture in Latin America and the Caribbean.
