    Transboundary animal diseases (TADs) including zonooses are highly contagious epidemic diseases that can spread extremely rapidly, irrespective of national borders. Controlling infectious diseases of animals, and minimizing their impact on countries’ economies and livelihoods of people is crucial. Veterinary laboratories can play a critical role in the early detection of new or re-emerging animal diseases, as well as in the fight against endemic diseases and in addressing complex issues at the h uman-animal-environment interface.

In this context, the VETLAB Network offers a unique opportunity for countries facing similar challenges to work together and better coordinate activities, including training, information dissemination, expertise and experience exchange, and the design of common disease control strategies.

    The FAO LMT training for the six Pacific countries; Cook Islands, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu and the FAO LMT assessment of the Fiji laboratories; Fiji Veterinary Pathology Laboratory and biosecurity authority of Fiji, were part of the technical support under TCP/SAP/3802 “Strengthening capacities to improve animal health and enhance livestock production in the Pacific region”. This project included the assessment of disease surveillance, communication and reporting capacities and the laboratory capacity of animal health and production services for the six Pacific countries. The detailed report on laboratory and surveillance capacity for the six Pacific countries is included in the end of assignment report on the information gathered from meetings with the stake holders in animal health and production services in each country and included public health laboratory participants.

    The 2nd edition of Manual on Mutation Breeding (MMB) was published in 1977. After nearly 40 years it is necessary to update Member States (MSs) with current knowledge in practical plant mutation breeding methods and to provide a comprehensive overview and guidelines for crop improvement using induced mutation and mutation breeding techniques. In 1977 there were 106 IAEA Member States, and as of March 2015 there are 164 MSs. The irradiation services for mutation induction in plant breeding has risen proportionally with the number of MSs. Therefore, the interest for mutation breeding has been increasing. There are now over 3222 mutant varieties released worldwide in over 200 crop species, as compared to 571 mutant varieties in 84 crop species in 1977. Plant mutation breeding continues to be an active area for crop improvement. Plant mutation breeding is under-going a renaissance with new methods and wide application to more crop species in which it can provide shortcuts in developing new mutant varieties. This is particularly relevant in safeguarding food security and is required to meet environmental challenges caused by climate change (resistance to pest and diseases and tolerance to abiotic stresses).

    The evaluation of radioactive releases to the environment is important for the support of sustainable development of agriculture, due to the potential for released radioactivity to enter food chain. The impact of radionuclides on the food chains are normally assessed by means of measurements of radioactivity in environmental samples, which include soils, feedstuffs, foodstuffs, and water. Sampling of agricultural soils and food, as well as measurement of various radionuclides for radioactivity requires efficient, cheap, effective and easily implemented techniques. The lack of such techniques may prevent the development of national infrastructures in providing the required level of food safety. This document provides the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for sampling and measurements of radionuclides in agriculture. It also includes an overview of the techniques relevant for agricultural soil and crops. Supplementary techniques such as the assessment of radiocaesium mobility in soils are also presented. The document is intended for individuals and authorities dealing with sampling and measurement of radionuclides in agricultural environments, and answered the many request for assistance from the IAEA Members in radionuclide measurements in agricultural soils and food items.
