Synopsis (short abstract) This Success Story highlights major aspects of support and technical assistance that the FAO-Led EU-funded UN-joint Programme provided to mobilise, empower, build capacity, and create interest among rural women to take a leading role in the cocoa value chain in East Sepik Province in Papua New Guinea. This publication focuses on the gender and cocoa components of this EU-funded Programme, its partnership with the Provincial Cocoa Board and Department of Agriculture and Livestock, and the joint endeavour to have women efforts and works recognised truly by male-dominant farming groups. The publication also sheds light on how the Programme supports and equipped the women with the requisite skills, knowledge, inputs, and tools to secure their fair participation in cocoa production and how this achievement contributes to sustainable value chain development in the area.

    ​This Success Story highlights major aspects of supports and assistance that the FAO-Led EU-funded UN-joint Programme provided for Support to Rural Entrepreneurship, Investment and Trade in Papua New Guinea (EU-STREIT PNG) provided to empower and build the capacity among cocoa farming-dependant families and communities in the Wosera and Maprik Districts of East Sepik Province in Papua New Guinea. This publication focuses on the activities undertaken in collaboration with the Programme's local partners, FOWIAD, to revitalise the existing potentials and to support the communities to be equipped with knowledge, skills, trainings, mentorships, tools, facilities, and managerial and supervisory mechanisms to further develop their scope of activities and to propagate, establish and run new sustainable and competitive cocoa cultivation in the Sepik Region.

    ​This newsletter highlights major activities undertaken under FAO-Led EU-funded UN-joint Programme for Support to Rural Entrepreneurship, Investment and Trade in Papua New Guinea (EU-STREIT). This issue focuses on the important activities, including supporting PNG authorities to use innovative agricultural survey methods, workshops held on gender mainstreaming in food value chains, training conducted on proper practices of agricultural products cultivation, husbandry and processing, and distribution of essential agricultural inputs. The Programme, in partnership with the national and local governments and administrations, mainly focuses on supporting the local population in advancing their agri-business knowledge, skills and activities pertaining to cocoa, vanilla and fisheries production in the East and West Sepik Provinces. Other stories in this issue are on the Programme Steering Committee's meeting, which was held to review the implementation of the First Phase of the Programme and approve the budget and work plan for 2021.
