Synopsis (short abstract) This report provides a comprehensive analysis of key challenges and barriers to achieving greater youth inclusion in the bioeconomy. The analysis covers key factors (push/pull factors) that impact youth employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, such as education, vocational training, skills building, technology and business development. It also underscores the significance of considering economic development opportunities, rural–urban dynamics, and sustainable resource management when implementing policies. The study assesses the youth inclusiveness of current bioeconomy strategies and related policies and identifies six policy goals and how they need to be addressed for greater youth inclusion. Additionally, the report assesses specific youth employment opportunities and challenges in different sectors of the bioeconomy and provides a specific set of recommendations to support youth participation in the bioeconomy. Finally, the report provides generic recommendations for better youth inclusion and support in the bioeconomy. Overall, the report concludes that the bioeconomy offers considerable opportunities and is attractive to youth, but more needs to be done to support youth entrepreneurship and employment in the sector.

There are few wage-earning opportunities for the 223 million unemployed or underemployed youth in developing and emerging economies. Many of those young people are in rural areas where the local economy is largely agricultural. Agripreneurship – entrepreneurial activity in agriculture – increases youth employment while teaching them the hard and soft skills they need to manage enterprises profitably and sustainably. This improves their revenue, reduces business failure and fosters innovation in the agrifood systems of tomorrow. The brief explains the principles of investing wisely in such programmes for maximum benefit. Promoting business opportunities for youth and women in inland fisheries and aquaculture food systems in arid areas 2024

This publication is the main outcome of a technical workshop on ‘Market system approach for resilient agri-aquaculture food systems in desert and arid countries’ organized by the FAO sub-regional office for North Africa from 13 to 15 October 2022 in Tunis, Tunisia. The workshop brought together experts from Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Tunisia as well as FAO staff with the aim of developing a work programme for the development of the sub-sector. The experts discussed and developed three categories of intervention: (i) Expanding market opportunities for freshwater fish; (ii) Improving opportunities to expand freshwater aquaculture and inland fisheries production; (iii) Promoting business opportunities for youth and women in inland fisheries and aquaculture food systems. These programmes concept notes were put together in this business portfolio of investment and are addressed to potential donors seeking to financially support sustainable aquaculture and inland fisheries development in the arid lands of North African countries.

Africa has the world’s youngest population, with more than 600 million people under the age of 24 and more than 750 million under the age of 35. Given the right opportunities, youth could drive inclusive economic growth across the continent. Young people account for around 35 percent of the workforce in sub-Saharan Africa and 40 percent in Northern Africa, of which about 40 percent are women. The growing youth population is challenging Africa’s ability to meet the demand for jobs, which has pushed many to migrate out of rural areas and across borders. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), therefore, have forged an initiative to facilitate and accelerate efforts to create jobs for young Africans, in particular, by supporting the development of agribusinesses and fostering agricultural entrepreneurship including through leveraging public and private investment in agriculture. The 2018 Conference on Youth Employment in Agriculture called for greater efforts to create jobs for African youth. This initiative adopts an integrated and multi-faceted approach to generating quality on- and off-farm work for young people in agriculture and agribusiness. It leverages the central role of agriculture in Africa’s development alongside the need to empower African youth to drive growth across the continent. It engages with the public and private sectors at continental, sub-regional and national level to provide young people opportunities for capacity development and access to resources, to improve stakeholder coordination and to facilitate the generation.
