Synopsis (short abstract) At its Fifth Session held at Lomé, Togo, in March 1977, the FAO Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF) requested FAO to organize four meetings within the framework of the Subcommittee on Management of Resources Within the Limits of National Jurisdiction, so that the coastal countries might establish programmes for the management of their resources (Resolution CECAF/V/2). Among the coastal pelagic stocks of the northern CECAF region, the sardinella, horse mackerel and mackerel were part of the resources to be considered. The CECAF Project called this meeting of the Working Group to evaluate the state of exploitation of these stocks and to recommend management measures. A special invitation was sent by the Government of Senegal to the Government of the USSR in order to secure the participation of Soviet scientists. The Working Group met at the Centre de recherches océanographiques de Dakar-Thiaroye (CRODT) under the Chairmanship of Mr. J. Chabanne. Messrs. J.A. Gulland, P. Fréon and M. Ansa-Emmim were elected Rapporteurs for the Meeting. The Session began with the introductory speeches of Mr. Chabanne, Mr. S. García1/ and Mr. Gulland, who welcomed the participants and underscored the importance of the subject under discussion, and the problems connected with a proper knowledge of the biology and dynamics of the species. Mr. Gulland stressed the value of exchanging data and the application of the results of the analyses for the elaboration of fisherie s management policy.

    The FAO Working Group on the Assessment of Small Pelagic Fish off Northwest Africa met in the Centre national de recherches océanographiques et des pêches (CNROP), Nouadhibou, Mauritania, from 24 to 31 March 2001. The working area was defined as the waters between the southern border of Senegal and the northern border of Morocco and the main groups of species defined as sardine, sardinellas, horse mackerels and mackerel. The overall objective of the Working Group is to contribute to the imp roved assessment of small pelagic resources in Northwest Africa and the analysis of fisheries management and exploitation options aimed at ensuring optimal and sustainable use of small pelagic fish resources for the benefit of coastal countries. The existing acoustic data series evidentiate that the main stocks have shown strong fluctuations during the last 9 years (particularly sardine and sardinella), but it is difficult to detect a long-term trend. On the other hand, CPUE data for horse mackerel and sardinella generally show a declining trend over the last few years. Although the group is not yet in a position to make detailed stock projections, it is expected that stocks will decline further in case of a further expansion of the (industrial) fishing effort in the area. As a general recommendation the group therefore suggests to adopt a precautionary approach, and not to increase the combined catch of small pelagic species above the average level attained during the most recent 5 years (1995-1999).

    The twentieth session of the FAO Working Group on the Assessment of Small Pelagic fish off Northwest Africa was postponed until 2021 due to the global pandemic situation in 2020. The 2021 meeting was divided into two digital sessions, and updated the assessments to 2020 (or 2019, if no 2020 data were available). A separate digital meeting was convened to discuss 2019 surveys for the region from the R/V Dr Fridtjof Nansen and review the progress of research using the data collected from these surveys. La vingtième session du Groupe de travail de la FAO sur l'évaluation des petits pélagiques au large de l'Afrique du Nord-Ouest a été reportée à 2021 en raison de la situation pandémique mondiale en 2020. La réunion de 2021 a été divisée en deux sessions numériques et a mis à jour les évaluations jusqu'en 2020 (ou 2019, si aucune donnée 2020 n'était disponible). Une réunion numérique distincte a été convoquée pour discuter les campagnes effectuées en 2019 par N/R Dr Fridtjof Nansen dans la région et examiner les progrès de recherches à l'aide des données collectées à partir de ces campagnes.

    A permanent FAO Working Group composed of scientists from the coastal States, and from countries or organizations that play an active role in Northwest African pelagic fisheries, was established in March 2001. The overall objective of the Working Group is to assess the state of the small pelagic resources in Northwest Africa and make recommendations on fisheries management and exploitation options aimed at ensuring optimal and sustainable use of small pelagic fish resources for the benefit of coastal countries. The nineteenth meeting of the FAO Working Group on the Assessment of Small Pelagic Fish off Northwest Africa was held in Casablanca, Morocco, from 8–13 July 2019. The meeting was organized by FAO in collaboration with the National Institute of Fisheries Research (INRH) of Morocco. Un groupe de travail permanent de la FAO composé de scientifiques des États côtiers et de pays ou d’organisations jouant un rôle actif dans les pêcheries pélagiques d’Afrique du Nord-Ouest a été créé en mars 2001. L’objectif général du groupe de travail est d’évaluer l’état des ressources pélagiques du nord-ouest de l’Afrique et formuler des recommandations sur les options de gestion et d’exploitation de la pêche visant à assurer une utilisation optimale et durable des ressources halieutiques en petits pélagiques au profit des pays côtiers. La dix-neuvième réunion du groupe de travail de la FAO sur l'évaluation des petits poissons pélagiques au large de l'Afrique du Nord-Ouest s'est tenue à Casablanca (Maroc) du 8 au 13 juillet 2019. La réunion a été organisée par la FAO en collaboration avec l'Institut National de Recherche Halieutique (INRH) du Maroc.
