Synopsis (short abstract) The 32nd Session of the Committee on Fisheries (July 2016) endorsed a proposal to declare an International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture, taking into account the existing FAO policy on the proclamation and implementation of international years, and acknowledging that this proposal needed to be further considered by all relevant FAO Governing Bodies.

    The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2022 the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022). FAO is the lead agency for celebrating the Year in collaboration with other relevant organizations and bodies of the United Nations system. IYAFA 2022 is an important recognition of the millions of small-scale fishers, fish farmers and fish workers who provide healthy and nutritious food to billions of people and contribute to achieving Zero Hunger. The objective of celebrating IYAFA 2022 is twofold: the Year aims to focus world attention on the role that small-scale fishers, fish farmers and fish workers play in food security and nutrition, poverty eradication and sustainable natural resource use – thereby increasing global understanding and action to support them.

    The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2022 the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022). IYAFA 2022 aims to highlight the importance of small-scale artisanal fisheries and aquaculture to our food systems, livelihoods, culture and the environment; to increase global understanding and action to support small-scale artisanal fish folks; and to enhance their participation in policy and decision-making that shape their everyday lives.

    The IYAFA 2022 Global Action Plan (IYAFA GAP) aims at building global momentum to empower small-scale artisanal fisheries and aquaculture and securing a sustainable future for these important sectors. Outlined here are a series of indicative and interconnected actions that are mutually reinforcing in the pillars of work described below. The GAP is meant to provide inspiration for small-scale artisanal fisheries and aquaculture proponents including, but not limited to, national administrations, Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations (CSOs), private enterprises, development agencies and intergovernmental bodies.
