During this webinar, organized by the SFS-MED Platform and held on 21 March 2024, stakeholders from across the Mediterranean shared knowledge and concrete experiences about the role of policymaking, research, capacity building, technology and finance in accompanying the Blue Transformation in the Mediterranean region.Panelists and speakers highlighted that the Mediterranean fisheries and aquaculture sectors are crucial for the region's aquatic food systems, supporting food security, enhancing livelihoods and protecting heritage. To this effect, the Blue Transformation outlines a vision to expand aquatic food systems and increase their contribution to nutritious and affordable healthy diets for the most vulnerable, while fostering equitable growth, especially for those communities that depend on fisheries and aquaculture.The discussion was instrumental in demonstrating that concerted efforts in investments, governance, technological innovation, education and knowledge exchange are needed to address a series of intricate challenges and leverage promising opportunities to propel the sustainable growth of fisheries and aquaculture in the Mediterranean.Multistakeholder and community-driven approaches, as well as an enhanced regional cooperation are essential to integrate agrifood and the blue sectors, advancing towards holistic regional development and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). -

A critical problem facing the broader Mediterranean region is the unsustainable trajectory of agrifood production, consumption and practices. Factors such as population growth, urbanization and globalization have been increasing food demand and influencing food consumption patterns, leading to unsustainable practices. These changes in the agrifood system have placed severe pressure on natural resources, contributing to land degradation, water scarcity, biodiversity loss and the depletion of marine stocks. The Mediterranean region’s socio-cultural and economic diversity has added another layer of complexity to the problem. Disparities in development and income between countries, as well as within them, are stark. Additionally, regional conflicts, migration pressures and the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic have added to the stress on agrifood systems and livelihoods. The project aimed to tackle these interrelated issues by (i) promoting a systems approach to agrifood systems transformation, emphasizing cross-sectoral collaboration to analyse interconnections between different challenges, drivers, outcomes and trade-offs for evidence-based policy-making, and (ii) working collaboratively at regional level through the Sustainable Food Systems in the Mediterranean (SFS-MED) Platform, a multistakeholder initiative designed to accompany regional stakeholders in their agrifood systems transformation efforts. -

During this webinar, organized by the SFS-MED Platform and held on 12 September 2023, stakeholders from across the Mediterranean shared knowledge and concrete experiences about the challenges and opportunities in greening agrifood systems in the Mediterranean region. Panelists and speakers highlighted that without a shift towards more systemic and holistic approaches that embrace sustainable practices, food may become increasingly expensive and less secure, exacerbating social and economic inequalities, and further damaging the environment. The discussion was instrumental in demonstrating that organizational, digital and financial innovations are accelerators for the adoption of sustainable agrifood practices. To this effect, it is key to foster supportive policy environments to secure the necessary finance for the green transtition. Furthermore, research, training, and skills development constitute indispensable tools to engage a young working-age population in multi-stakeholder platforms that promote collaborative and integrated approaches with the aim to achieve the sustainable transformation of agrifood systems.

No results found.While insect consumption by humans or entomophagy has been traditionally practiced in various countries over generations and represents a common dietary component of various animal species (birds, fish, mammals), farming of insects for human food and animal feed is relatively recent. Production of this ‘mini-livestock’ brings with it several potential benefits and challenges. The objective of this document is to provide the reader with an overview of the various food safety issues that could be associated with edible insects. The intended audiences of this publication are food safety professionals, policymakers, researchers, insect producers as well as consumers. The regulatory frameworks that govern production, trade and consumption of insects in various regions are discussed. The document ends with elucidating some other major challenges, such as consumer acceptance and scaling up production, that the edible insect industry would need to overcome to have a more global reach. -

Ce document, d'une nature à la fois technique et pratique, s'adresse principalement aux éleveurs, aux Auxiliaires Villageois d'Élevage (AVE) et aux agents d’encadrement technique des éleveurs. Il a pour objet de définir un ensemble minimal de normes en matière de biosécurité, applicables à tous les producteurs de volaille. La biosécurité, concept intrinsèquement défini comme un ensemble de bonnes pratiques mises en œuvre dans le but de prévenir l'introduction et la propagation des maladies au sein des exploitations avicoles, se révèle être le moyen de prévention et de lutte le plus efficace contre la grippe aviaire et autres maladies contagieuses. Ce manuel s'enrichisse notamment par l'incorporation d'illustrations éloquentes, mettant en lumière aussi bien les bonnes et mauvaises pratiques en matière de biosécurité au sein des exploitations avicoles. -

environmental issues and options
2006This report aims to assess the full impact of the livestock sector on environmental problems, along with potential technical and policy approaches to mitigation. The assessment is based on the most recent and complete data available, taking into account direct impacts, along with the impacts of feedcrop agriculture required for livestock production. The livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global. The findings of this report suggest that it should be a major policy focus when dealing with problems of land degradation, climate change and air poullution, water shortage and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity.
