No results found. The fifth meeting of the Planning Group for the Coordination of Acoustic Surveys off Northwest Africa was held in Dakar, Senegal, from 29 to 30 October 2006. All of the local research vessels had carried out acoustic surveys since the 2005 meeting of the Planning group. The analysis of the results of the coordinated parallel survey carried out in the fourth quarter of 2005 had shown that the variability of the allocation of recorded acoustic energy between the local vessels and the R /V DR FRIDTJOF NANSEN had been within acceptable limits. One coordinated survey was also carried out between the R/V ITAF DEME of Senegal and the R/V AL AWAM of Mauritania however no common report had been produced. The importance of doing so in the future was stressed. The countries are still working to find solutions with respect to problems related to noise levels and trawling as well as to ensure adequate funding for vessel operations. A plan to conduct a coordinated regional sur vey in October–December to continue the time series started with the R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN was made. -
Book (series)Technical reportReport of the third meeting of the Planning Group for the Coordination of Acoustic Surveys off Northwest Africa. Dakar, Senegal, 22–23 October 2004. / Rapport de la troisième réunion du Groupe de planification pour la coordination des campagnes acoustiques au large de l'Afrique du Nord-Ouest. Dakar, Sénégal, 22-23 octobre 2004. 2005The third meeting of the Planning Group for the Coordination of Acoustic Surveys off Northwest Africa was held in Dakar, Senegal, from 22 to 23 October 2004. The meeting was the third of its kind, following two meetings in Dakar, Senegal, from 26 to 28 October 2002 and from 28 to 29 October 2003. The scientists from the Northwest African region expressed their commitment to conduct their own acoustic surveys. All of the local research vessels conducted acoustic surveys in 2004. The a bility of running acoustic surveys in the sub-region has developed to a good level and focus in the future should be on the development of human capacity and to resolve the recurrent technical problems of trawl performance, noise discrimination and data storage. The timeframe of the continued surveys with R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN and the support through the Nansen Programme is unknown and high priority must therefore be given to the improvement of scientists skills in acoustic abundan ce estimation.

Also available in:
No results found. The purpose of planning for forestry development is to establish a workable framework for forest use and conservation which incorporates the economic, social and environmental dimensions on a sustainable basis. The framework is about creating a shared vision of how forests will be used and protected. This can be summed up in a single central question: Trees and forests for whom and for what? The question is not new but what is new is the perception that so many different groups have an interest in the reply. Forestry planning has traditionally been mainly concerned with the production of timber for industry and other wood products, and with forest industry development. Planning for environmental goals also has a long history but was largely restricted to designated areas for exclusive conservation. National forestry development agencies were essentially responsible for the sustained yield management on protected public forest lands and for reserved forests. The term "sustained yield " was mostly limited to wood production and therefore excluded the majority of other forest products and services. Although most forestry agencies have made progress towards multiple-use management, planning remains often biased towards timber in a wide range of countries. Many of the actions taken in order to stimulate forestry development in the immediate failed to sustain the momentum of growth in the longer term. Short term achievements sometimes resulted in degradation or destruction of the stock of natural capital needed in order to maintain growth in the future or reduced options for future end uses by degrading the forest capital. -

Of these assets, the Library is unquestionably the most outstanding and is a lasting record of the Institute's work and its achievement in the field of agriculture. This catalogue will undoubtedly contribute towards a better knowledge of this international Library. This volume in its present form, represents the systematic card-index, by subject of the Brussels Decimal Classification, in French and English, and it's supplemented by the general alphabetical index of authors.
