No results found.This paper attempts to improve the predictive capabilities of preimpoundment studies, with special emphasis on fish yields. It relies heavily on empirical models based on a relatively limited data base. It is hoped that the results will show that meaningful predictions can be made from simple, easily obtained data, a consideration especially important in an era of limited manpower and financial resources. The models described in this paper have not always been based on African data. Those that have been will be affected by the general inaccuracy of the original information, especially that regarding fish yields from African reservoirs. Nevertheless, if these limitations are borne in mind, the models may still be valuable and will have served their purpose if they stimulate others to use and improve them. An appendix has been included to illustrate the use of the models described in the text in an actual preimpoundment situation. -

No results found.This report contains ten case studies which serve as background for a synthesis report published in FAO Fisheries Technical Paper 426/1. They have been conducted in five medium sized lakes in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Five of the case studies focus on biological and environmental effects while the remaining five are concerned with historical and sociological analysis. In different ways all the case studies focus on some of the following three featur es, relevant for the management of freshwater fisheries in the South Africa Development Community (SADC) region: – How has fishing effort developed in these lakes over the last 50 years? Despite a considerable increase in the total fishing effort in the region, the report demonstrates great variation in effort dynamics both in time and place. Most papers distinguish between changes related to the number of people and changes in technology and investment patterns and show that most of the increases in effort have been population-driven. Only in the case of Lake Malombe have changes in effort mainly been investment-driven. – What causes the changes in fishing effort? -

No results found.This is a brief review of small pelagic fishes and fisheries of Africa's large lakes and reservoirs. Small pelagic fishes have an important role to play in increasing Africa's inland water fish supply because the available potential generally has been underutilized. Pelagic communities in African inland waters usually consist of small zooplanktivorous species and a group of predators which feed upon them. In addition to being small these prey fishes usually have a short life-cycle and high produ ctive potential. There are four major families which include pelagic species with actual or potential fishery importance in Africa. The general biological characteristics of these species are discussed and the major pelagic fisheries in Africa are described.
