No results found.As part of the SIDS Solutions Forum, 30-31 August 2021, FAO collected innovations and creative digital technologies that respond to local problems and challenges. The use of digital technologies in the agriculture and fisheries sectors of the Pacific is still in its infancy. As a result, farmers in SIDS, especially those in remote locations, have difficulties accessing actors along the value chain and in international markets. This flyer presents a platform for agriculture value chain stakeholders to connect with one another, and access information as well as simple digital tools for improved farm management. -

No results found.The year 2015 marked the end of the global Millennium Development agenda and 2016 heralds a transition to the new 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development. Asia-Pacific Region not only met the MDG target of halving the proportion of people suffering from hunger, but was also the region with the largest reduction in the number of undernourished people in the world. Despite good progress being made by many countries in tackling malnutrition, the overall rate of progress is less than desired and the re are several countries and sub-regions where the prevalence rates are still very high. The analysis presented in this report will help encourage dialogue and shape a new public narrative towards eradicating hunger and malnutrition and creating a transformative change for sustainable development.Most governments are taking concrete actions to address the problem and there is a clear recognition of strengthening agriculture and food systems in a manner that brings more affordable, hea lthier and diverse food options within everyone’s reach.
This report also introduces a special section which will focus on a different selected key issue or trend affecting food security and nutrition in the region each year. This year, the focus is on the importance of milk and smallholder dairy in view of the remarkable growth in the production and consumption of milk and milk products in the region. The section concludes that the promotion of milk consumption and small-scale dairying offe rs potential for triple wins in nutrition, rural livelihoods and the environment.See the other Regional Overviews:

Since the 1970s and 1980s, community-based forestry has grown in popularity, based on the concept that local communities, when granted sufficient property rights over local forest commons, can organize autonomously and develop local institutions to regulate the use of natural resources and manage them sustainably. Over time, various forms of community-based forestry have evolved in different countries, but all have at their heart the notion of some level of participation by smallholders and comm unity groups in planning and implementation. This publication is FAO’s first comprehensive look at the impact of community-based forestry since previous reviews in 1991 and 2001. It considers both collaborative regimes (forestry practised on land with formal communal tenure requiring collective action) and smallholder forestry (on land that is generally privately owned). The publication examines the extent of community-based forestry globally and regionally and assesses its effectiveness in del ivering on key biophysical and socioeconomic outcomes, i.e. moving towards sustainable forest management and improving local livelihoods. The report is targeted at policy-makers, practitioners, researchers, communities and civil society. -

No results found.Following the introduction, Chapter 2 provides an overview of mitigation in the forest sector, addressing the handling of forests under UNFCCC. Chapters 3 to 5 focus on forest-based mitigation options – afforestation, reforestation, REDD+ and forest management – and Chapters 6 and 7 focus on wood-product based options – wood energy and green building and furnishing. The publication describes these activities in the context of UNFCCC rules, assessing their mitigation potential and economic attrac tiveness as well as opportunities and challenges for implementation. Chapter 8 discusses the different considerations involved in choosing the right mix of options as well as some of the instruments and means for implementation. Chapter 8 also highlights the co-benefits generated by forest-based mitigation and emphasizes that economic assessment of mitigation options needs to take these benefits into account. The concluding chapter assesses national commitments under UNFCCC involving forest miti gation and summarizes the challenges and opportunities. -

This technical document is intended to give an overview of the use of several remote sensing tools produced by FAO for peatland restoration monitoring in Indonesia. At the core of these tools is the Soil Moisture Mapping (SMM) module in the FAO System for Earth Observation Data Access, Processing and Analysis for Land Monitoring (SEPAL). The Soil Moisture Mapping module was first created using available free, global satellite datasets and meteorological observations to retrieve soil moisture worldwide based on the algorithms developed by Greifeneder et al. 20191. To interpret the soil moisture mapping results, this report shows step-by-step followed methodologies for: the selection of available field data for validation; the study of land cover physical properties in the Indonesian landscape that have an influence on the correct interpretation of the product; and detecting, characterizing, and monitoring land cover change within time series (BFAST). The aim is to provide practical guidance to perform peatland monitoring analysis and strengthen capacities of practitioners and institutions in charge of peatland management, monitoring and reporting with the help of tools on SEPAL. This builds on the report “Peatland mapping and monitoring: recommendations and technical overview” (FAO, 2020). The guidance focuses on the description step by step of FAO peatland monitoring tools, showing its advantages and limitations. It also contains summaries of peatland ecology and condition for its assessment with remote sensing products. This document offers recommendations to interpret the results and integrate them into national monitoring frameworks.
